I hope its okay to post this, but I'm not affiliated with the company in any way and hoped it might benefit others as it will us. I recieved a recommendation from a colleague for a nursery based in Monbulk, who are primarily a small wholesale nursery but who do open to the public the first Sunday of each month. We popped out to see them this past Sunday in advance of doing our garden when we move in later on in the year just to see what they had and if it was worth going through them.
We had an indicative plant schedule which was mostly natives and 'popular' plants from our developers, and they had pretty much everything on it, plus the fruit trees we were after, even if not exactly the same genus. What they didn't have, they offered to source , and were really accommodating if we'd needed to pop out there outside of the day they opened, just asking for advance notice.
For us from the western suburbs, it was a bit of a long (but beautiful) drive out to the area, and the nursery setup itself is informal, but the savings were well and truly worth it! We popped in to a couple of nurseries afterwards and were just gaping at the price difference - a $200 tree was going for $25, and the ones we looked at were in much better condition, and a larger tree and pot! Plants we were looking at in nurseries for $10.99 and $19.99, we were looking at $4 - so for people like us looking at putting in a whole new garden - will represent a massive great cost saving!
One the day we bought 3 plants of varying sizes - cost us $15, the equivalent in a nursery would have been roughly about $50.
Besides this, they were nice folks who were well and truly prepared to give us the time of day and help us out with advice! http://www.treetopnursery.com.au/ has all their contact info on it
