Browse Forums Landscape & Garden Design 1 Feb 25, 2010 6:40 pm I have three young (2yo) Olive trees with grass growing right up to the trunks. I want to remove the grass to replace with a mulched bed about 700mm diameter. OK to just dig up the turf with a spade or will I damage the roots too much ? Dont really want to spray. cheers Re: Removing grass from underneath Olive trees 2Feb 25, 2010 7:39 pm Slide a sharp flat shovel just on the surface scrapping/slicing off the grass and a tiny bit of dirt. After a couple of goes you will get the feel and the grass will come off like butter. I have done it to quite a few trees of all ages with no problems. Considering you probably have sand it might not be so easy so you could also smoother the grass with thick wet newspaper for a week or so then remove it and mulch. Re: Removing grass from underneath Olive trees 4Feb 26, 2010 3:42 pm If you know someone in council or in the golf course game, they might have some Fusilade. Pretty expensive an very toxic but won't harm the olives and will wipe out the grass no worries Re: Removing grass from underneath Olive trees 5Feb 26, 2010 9:40 pm Whaaaaa? Fu Fu Fu Fu What about the soil microbes and the frogs , Fu ? Nah I'm not keen on spraying anything, will give the wet newspaper a go. What if I was to dig out the grass and mulch over, would I be damaging the Olive tree roots, Fu ? cheers Re: Removing grass from underneath Olive trees 6Feb 26, 2010 11:46 pm Yep you'd be doing some damage but if they are old enough trees they'll shrug it off. As for Fusilade, personally there's a time and a place. I would be very very selective in it's application and finding every other alternative is the best and cheapest option. Fusilade is $160 a litre. You can only buy 1ltr as the smallest quantity. It does a Hectare. Once the grass is sorted treat the olives to some nice straws and lay green mulch on top of that Re: Removing grass from underneath Olive trees 7Feb 27, 2010 10:17 am I use Fusilade to edge my Empire around gardens. I have made sure no ornamental grasses are used in the gardens. I mainly use Lomandra, Liriope, and Dianella next to the EZ. As EZ is a slow spreader, I only need to spry every 6 months. A lot less work than edging the turf regularly. The most likely cause of your timber swelling (parquetry?) is either a plumbing leak or carelessly leaving water on floors after use or both.
