Browse Forums Landscape & Garden Design 1 Feb 24, 2010 1:52 pm Hey guys after some suggestion to trees i may be able to use. I have a garden bed of 110cm between foot path and turf that i have laid. Can someone suggest a tree that can be planted in there with out worrying that the roots will one day dig up the turf or foot path? Ive been looking at Capital pear trees but cant find any info on the roots. Mark Re: Tree for small garden bed 2Feb 24, 2010 8:55 pm And you won't find info on tree roots. Turf and trees will always butt heads. Turf robs tree roots of much needed nutrients and moisture. Also you will encounter issues with shade on the turf so hopefully you have used Empire Zoysia, Palmetto or Sir Walter. Maybe look at Prunus nigra. Beautiful small tree. As for roots well no matter what they have to grow somewhere. Re: Tree for small garden bed 3Feb 25, 2010 7:05 am Crepe Myrtel, tough as old boots once established. They laugh off full sun and hot northerly winds + they grow in clay as long as there is some drainage. Plenty of colours/sizes to chose from, shrub to small tree. Great long flowering tree, newer ones below don't sucker and are virtually pest free. http://www.flemings.com.au/indian_summer.asp Re: Tree for small garden bed 4Feb 25, 2010 11:51 am I have mentioned it before in a few other threads on this topic (have a search there are loads) and a great small tree would be Feijoa sellowiana. Wonderful productive small tree that can have anything thrown at it Good for climbing for kids, fairly fast to establish a feature size, very waterwise, handles wind better than many bar a sheoak. Birds love them Flowers can be eaten and of course so can the fruit Re: Tree for small garden bed 5Feb 25, 2010 7:46 pm Forgot to add, make sure you do some decent soil prep with the epping clay-crete, eg raising the bed and mixing through conditioners (test so the water doesn't pool in the bottom of the hole for very long) . Any tree will take off far quicker than having to adapt to heavy clay thats out that way.
