Browse Forums Landscape & Garden Design 1 Feb 23, 2010 3:18 am If I was to build an open slat pergola from my house to the side fence then just inside the fence incorporate a screen wall of merbau slats or maybe blue board rendered, would I have to get council permision or even neighbours permission, as they have a bedroom toilet and laundry on that side. Because our patio area sits up higher than the fence line this means the fence is only about 5 foot high and I want a screen at least 6 foot high but if I link it to the house it will become higher, as it will join onto the house by the gutter. Or does what you do in your own boundry not matter as long as it has not got a covered roof, as I understand then you have to get council permisson and have gutters etc. Know where your going in life............... you may already be there Re: Do you need permision for a screen wall? 2Feb 23, 2010 5:59 am If the structure you're building doesn't normally require a permit, then it won't matter whether it's just within the boundary, or 5m within the boundary - it's on your land. Of course, you have to be reasonable; your neighbours might have cause to object if you out up a huge monster of a screen and blocked out all their sunlight or something.... We've just had a screen built along our side boundary that's 2.1m high (fences are 1.8m) and needed no permits or permissions from anyone. We did speak to our neighbours as a courtesy, to let them know what we were planning. They had no problem with the idea, as it gives their bedrooms more privacy, as well as our outdoor living area. I'd suggest you let the neighbours know, and also consider what the view from their side will be like. An unfinished piece of blueboard might be a bit of an eyesore if they have windows looking out on that side. You could consider painting the back, at least the area that's exposed above the fence, and maybe even consult with them on colour, since you won't see it. If it's timber slats, just make sure it looks reasonably finished from their side. I have had a look at yours kek looking good I will call around to the council after work and ask them. Our house has been on the market and not sold yet so I am getting ideas of what to do next if we end up staying here Know where your going in life............... you may already be there Re: Do you need permision for a screen wall? 5Feb 23, 2010 8:20 am kek ... Hi kek, We'd need some slat screening too ... would you mind posting us some pics of yours? I'm also wondering how did they do the lower parts of your screen. I'm imagining that our slats will start some 70 cm off the ground or even higher (as they are not really needed that low). Just to get the idea ... Thanks!! Re: Do you need permision for a screen wall? 6Feb 23, 2010 8:44 am I'm documenting the whole thing here: http://forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=19&t=29727 Our screen has a rendered section in the middle (or will once it's actually rendered. ). The slats are placed quite close together too, but you could space them out more if you prefer - you can use narrower boards too, or a combination of wide and narrow. So far, it looks like this: Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ The base will have a raised planter in front of it, so no need to do anythign fancy. You could just have slats going all the way down, quite close to the ground and have a garden bed with low-growing plants to disguise the bottom of the posts. Or if a garden bed isn't feasible, just some deorative pebbles, or a row of bricks/blocks...? Here are a few pics I've collected for inspiration: Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Re: Do you need permision for a screen wall? 8Feb 23, 2010 3:55 pm Well I went to the council after work. They said I can go 2 metres high without approval, and can go higher if neighbours agree and I get permit. That is from ground level. So no another query I thought of is....... If I build my patio right up too the fence the level of that will be about 25cms up the fence, thats whats making the fence seem low as it is 6 ft but the neighbours did not do a cut and fill neither did my builder so all the boundry fences are stupid hights I will feel like digging up the fence and lifting it up and sitting it at my level But if I have to go ground level from the bottom fence railing then I wont really be gaining much, unles I com in a foot and build up my gound level to the top of the slab. They said If I go higher than 2 metres then they have to check structual things but I can go high with planning permission as they have a high deck and when they stand on it the top of the fence is waist hight, so I can build a cabana or something for privacy. I got plenty of time for ideas as the house will still be on the market for a while, so not doing anything whilst thats happening. Will keep a close eye for some pics of these sorts of things on here Know where your going in life............... you may already be there Re: Do you need permision for a screen wall? 9Feb 23, 2010 4:18 pm There are a few fences around here that are ridiculously low too. Luckily, our block was flat and the house is pretty much at ground level, so we got the whole 1.8m height with our fences. I'm sure your neighbours won't have a problem if you want to go higher - after all, it's looking after their privacy too. You have no photo with your post.
