Browse Forums Landscape & Garden Design 1 Feb 19, 2010 7:14 pm I asked at our tender whether we had to have the spoil removed. The stuff that is scraped back for the build. I wonder whether it is decent top soil that is just getting removed. The tender presenter said it's basically just going to be weed and not useful for a garden. But I was wondering if it's weed that will compost down over the period of the build (20-25 weeks) then it may actually be useful "spoil" to be mixed in with some organic matter. What do you think? Should I ask for the spoil to remain rather than be removed. It's $1800 ish to remove it. The building site was previously bushland until the estate was developed, so nothing has been brought in, it's all very sandy soil and we will be enriching the soil anyway but the bushland surrounds have a thriving environment on this soil too. I'm big on Fu's recommendations about organic soil, enriching the soils with green mulches and have sourced a green mulch supplier already and hoping that the back neighbour block that hasn't sold yet when we are ready for delivery of organic soil and green mulch will be still vacant land so we can deliver a good load straight into the back yard as well as a load to the front yard. We did this in a previous property and had a lovely flourishing garden that with twice a year mulching was really quite low maintenance (our patch of lawn was rather small, enough space for a trampoline and clothesline). My garden plan for our build will be clothesline, climbing gym and swing set for kids with lawn and then the remaining yard will be raised garden beds for vegies and then Aussie natives bushland. I have a dog that will only deposit on mulched garden beds as we house trained him to mulched gardens instead of anwyhere outside and especially away from the kids lawn. So apart from our own thoughts on gardens we know we must get some mulched garden in pretty quickly for our dogs sanity. He is not happy when he is dog sat when there are no mulched gardens.
