Browse Forums Landscape & Garden Design 1 Feb 19, 2010 11:30 am Hey Crew Im after some help assistance choosing some plants to run down my back fenceline. I managed to kill off the 3 magnolias i wanted to use, but would still like to put some in along the fence. There is a concrete stormwater drain under there somewhere but i would presume there is a good deal of soil on top of it for the tree's to grow into and around. My thinking so far is that i could do maybe 4 or larger magnolia's spread across the fence line, and then in between put in something else that will be large enough to cover the fence height at least so more smaller tree's or shrubs. I dont know if little gems will be big enough, i need to check how high they grow but id like them pretty big. In a storm a fair amount of water does travel down the hill into the drain in the back corner so i have to be concious of that as well, i wont ever be able to have a standard mulched garden bed there as any mulch would end up going down the drain. Note in the photo's that on the left hand side it is mostly covered by a trampoline and a fort. Will Magnolia's work and what else could I plant in between to start to cover the fence? http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a77/billdsl/House_Build/Landscaping/Landscaping005.jpg http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a77/billdsl/House_Build/Landscaping/Landscaping007.jpg http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a77/billdsl/kids72009.jpg Blog - http://snakedr.blogspot.com/ Build Thread - viewtopic.php?f=31&t=12084&p=307406#p307406 Status - PCI 15/10. Re: Plant Selection Assistance Please 4Feb 20, 2010 8:25 am okay thanks fu, any others you would recommend spread off and on between the magnolia's or would you stick to just magnolia's, or would you go something different altogether? Re: Plant Selection Assistance Please 5Feb 20, 2010 11:40 am Maybe pick two large shrubs. Stick to them the whole way around. Do long blocks of each and alternate them. Lets say you choose magnolia kay paris, then do say Vibernam emerald lustre or odouratissima (better choice) Or better still would be some Bottle brushes or hakeas that will be good habitat forming plants. The contrasts would be nice as well Make a garden bed surrounding the boundary at least 600mm wide but 1000mm would be perfect and also allows you to use that garden bed for growing your own food under the shrubs Re: Plant Selection Assistance Please 6Mar 01, 2010 10:41 pm I have a problem with your lawn near childrens play area looks like it has a drying out problem maybe some wettting agent and h2o would help. P.S. I think you may not have retic in that new lawn tell me if im wrong. Also go with all Fu's hedge plants. I would add albany wooly bush and maybe small acacias. Brigadier feed the soil not the water table. Brigadier Re: Plant Selection Assistance Please 7Mar 02, 2010 8:50 am thanks for the input guys, ive been looking around at other 'local' plants and the leopard tree's (Caesalpinia ferrea) are very popular, they grow quite large over time but throw some great shade, would they be of any use mixed in with another one of the options? I know i can propogate them from seed myself too Brigadier those back yard shots are a mixed selection of just laid and shortly after being laid (we had no rain for 2 straight months when we moved in) so it dried out quite a lot. Is retic another term for irrigation? If so I am now using recycled grey water to irrigate the backyard but with the preparation the landscapers provided the grass isn't yet setup to be happy, ive only just got to starting to topsoil the back so it will get better. the front is going great but it got a topsoil months ago. plus with the size of the yard im not going to keep the back as good as the front so it doesnt get as much attention, its an 800m2 block so its hard to keep it all irrigated Blog - http://snakedr.blogspot.com/ Build Thread - viewtopic.php?f=31&t=12084&p=307406#p307406 Status - PCI 15/10.
