They won't come off and no need to adopt a whole new type of fitting. I have been using these for many years and they never skip a beat even after years of being dropped, stepped on and left in the sun. Yeah well I posted my response, however I thought now I should mention that terracotta jugs buried in the soil are considered highly effective and efficient at delivering water slowly. In poor places, they make these clay jugs, big bulby bits on the base and a tiny neck and fill hole.
