Browse Forums Landscape & Garden Design 1 Jan 23, 2010 9:16 am OK Mr Manchu has mentioned frogs a few times now so that's all the opening I need to ask about them. Or more specifically: ponds. I'm currently digging out a large tree stump from my front yard and better half suggests its the shape of a nice pond. Good idea, but is it just a constant work generator ? How hard are they to set up and maintain really ? And what about those frogs ? Do the hard jobs first. The easy jobs will take care of themselves. - Dale Carnegie Re: Of Fu frogs and ponds 2Jan 23, 2010 10:12 am Where you are coming from is where you are going to... Re: Of Fu frogs and ponds 3Jan 23, 2010 11:32 am Best to build them in the shade. You need to try select fish species that won't feed on the taddies. In the sun you get hassles with alge growth. Best get a good pump and filter (preferably a filter that is a biofilter or even a uv light in it too ) Plants, well they are easy to come by but also you need to create habitat around the pond. These froggies just like to hang near water, not in it http://frogwatch.museum.wa.gov.au/ http://www.frogsaustralia.net.au/conser ... -frogs.cfm http://afrogpond.com/ For West Aussies looking to have a frog pond created for them, get in touch with these guys perhaps they can do something for you? http://www.sustainableoutdoors.com.au/ Re: Of Fu frogs and ponds 4Jan 23, 2010 2:50 pm that is mostly in the shade Where you are coming from is where you are going to... Re: Of Fu frogs and ponds 5Jan 23, 2010 3:16 pm I don't think he was telling you that it wasn't in the shade Hey Fu, what was Josh talking about regarding the mozzies (or lack of) when you have a pond? What were the fish he had that ate them? I always thought that still water attracted mozzies, but he was saying the opposite happens in his garden (but I can't remember exactly what he said!) Re: Of Fu frogs and ponds 14Jan 24, 2010 3:15 am Aw Onc, I just noticed some of your fish are swimming the other way! Did they decide to do that themselves or did you show them the way? Fu / Onc, did you see my question above regarding Josh Byrne's pond and the mozzies? Now I want to incorporate a pond into my landscaping! Onc, you looking for a second 'comeback' tour up to the big smoke? My tac-home-ter: Been in 8 months! Re: Of Fu frogs and ponds 15Jan 24, 2010 11:00 am annie.s Hey Fu, what was Josh talking about regarding the mozzies (or lack of) when you have a pond? What were the fish he had that ate them? I always thought that still water attracted mozzies, but he was saying the opposite happens in his garden (but I can't remember exactly what he said!) It was dwarf Perch. They won't eat the taddies and they will feed on the algae and mozzie larvae. You will need plants to feed from the nitrates the fish produce. The examples he had were lots of ceramic bowls, sealed up with marine/fish tank safe silicon where the holes were in the pot. A few small water plants in there and he had them stashed in among the plants and trees. Lots of shade, irrigation replenishes the water.
