There is a cultivar of that called Red Riding Hood, that only grows to 3 foot. There are three main species sold as purple fountain grass. Each gets bigger than the next. Although some of these have species names that are classified as weed problems, I am yet to experience or hear from others that these sold as purple fountain grass will have seed that germinates. They are grown by division and first introduced to Australia from the US by a mate of mine. There is a newer cultivar called Pennisetum Alopecuroides 'Penstripe' which isn't red but is also of sterile stock and will not be a weed problem. has a green leaf with cream striping through them. It is smaller as well Re: purple fountain grass - pennisetum rubrum 4Feb 10, 2010 6:30 am Thanks Helyn & Fu. Fu, I've googled Pennisetum Alopecuroides 'Penstripe & found this, where the website states htat it's an Oz cultivar. Is this right ? I know where to get this and who grows it, so if you can't find it at your local nursery, I'll find out who the WA mob is exporting too over east and you can get it ordered there Re: purple fountain grass - pennisetum rubrum 6Feb 10, 2010 11:20 pm sounds good Fu. I wasn't even thinking of getting these from a nursery Fu, as I need enough to plant along our 37metre fence line. That's a lot of plants Was googling mail order nurseries & found some for $ 4.50 each. I'd love to be able to get them for less Any chance you could pass the supplier info on to me in case I can get them cheaper than that? Cut back to the ground. Otherwise they will look awful. It will be very bare for a few months. Please make sure what you are buying is that specific variety "penstripe" . You maybe just getting a weed problem otherwise Re: purple fountain grass - pennisetum rubrum 8Feb 11, 2010 7:30 am Fu Manchu Coming from WA, there's no way that would happen Quote: As for that area, you will need to cut these back in the winter. (I'm not sure if that's the correct spelling) Creates a nice native hedge with pretty white flowers. Does need trimming twice a year. It does get to about 1m though. After 4 years - we're in! Re: purple fountain grass - pennisetum rubrum 10Feb 11, 2010 9:02 am ooohhh purple fountain grass... isn't it just beautiful stuff!? we just planted 3 in a little strip in between the driveway and verandah, I cant wait for them to grow all big and glorious like those ones Southies our bricks are red so the grass as my DH said will probably blend in a bit with the bricks, we probably should have got green too. Our mulch is light coloured though which provides a nice contrast. Didn't you just say though that you are planting them along the fenceline? wouldn't that be far enough away from house not to blend in too much? or is fence made of brick... Thanks sc, I've googled it & some grow to 2metres in height . We've presently planted over 70 murrayas around our block So my DH will flip if he has to trim anymore plants. Even though the wistringia is a gorgeous plant, I'll have to move on to something easier to maintain - for our marriages's sake Built the Eden Brae Cambridge 34 Family with Boston Corner Facade Re: purple fountain grass - pennisetum rubrum 12Feb 11, 2010 1:34 pm donuts ooohhh purple fountain grass... isn't it just beautiful stuff!? we just planted 3 in a little strip in between the driveway and verandah, I cant wait for them to grow all big and glorious like those ones Southies our bricks are red so the grass as my DH said will probably blend in a bit with the bricks, we probably should have got green too. Hi there donuts.......glad to 'see' you back . OUr fence is the same as our house - dark. So the red colour would get lost. Even though I love that colour, the green/variegated would probably work better.
