Browse Forums Landscape & Garden Design Re: Advice on what to plant around a pool 21Jan 29, 2010 3:07 pm Ms Vintage, I can sincerely sympathise with you. The one with the trunk the size of a fridge sounds like a dwarf Washingtonia cotton tail, I had one of these along with five Cocos's (1 in the front and 4 out back). I cut down the 4 in the back yard several years ago. Three years ago I did the owner builder thing. When I had the power line disconnected from the old house the first thing I did was cut down the Washingtonia and the large Cocos in the front. When the demolisher came in to demolish the old house I slipped the plant operator a carton to remove one of the cocos palm stumps out the back that was going to be in the way of the new house. At the time I didn't worry about the two in the front but I wish I did, cause later when my electrician mate came to do the underground power I got him to use his small excavator to dig around the Washingtonia stump (again I didn't worry about the cocos stump) to which he dug a hole approx 1.8m cubic, then I busted a gut for a few days to remove the massive stump and roots... masses of roots. Then last year I was extending and concreting the driveway well guess what the cocos stump was in the way so it was another few days of gut busting work to remove. I had a single stem Fishtail palm that was around 9metres high, it did have a beautiful head on it but the last year or so it started to be come ratty and the old fronds were not breaking off, like cocos palms don't. It was within about 600mm of the new house. I'd been contemplating for a fair while to cut it down, a couple of Saturdays ago I cut it down, but I'm not digging out the stump, it'll be a seat in the garden. Anyway enough of my rambling on. Re: Advice on what to plant around a pool 22Jan 29, 2010 5:26 pm I posted some palms that will do well in Melbourne a few months back. Maybe if you do a search....?? One of my mates in Perth absolutely LOVES palms. His yard is full of them and looks like a tropical rainforest... So, if you are after anything 'different' palmwise, he might be able to point you in the right direction. I have to check with him before giving away his contact details. Use welding gloves when pruning them The spines will leave a throbbing pain far worse than that given from a rose thorn For Sandgropers there really is nowhere better than here for palms and for others the info is topnotch. Ari might have some good palm links too http://www.premierpalms.com/ http://www.pacsoa.org.au/ Thanks again Simeon for being so elaborate. Appreciate it. Its gives us a very idea. There are water stains above a couple of windows… 2 3826 |
