Browse Forums Landscape & Garden Design 1 Jan 13, 2010 10:35 am hi, There are many weeds growing on my backyard, cos of the rain and not yet to remove them. I heard there is weed mat, but after I remove the weeds, can I just put cover the dirt with plastic sheets to stop weed growing? This is only for temporary... given we could start to work with our backyard soon::sad:: Thanks. Re: Can this prevent weed growing? 2Jan 13, 2010 12:02 pm I wouldn't..... the noise of it flapping around in the wind would drive me nuts. And given the gale-force winds around here, it'd probably end up in a neighbour's yard, no matter how well you tried to weigh it down. Besides, I think the soil would go all smelly underneath. I just give the weeds a spray with Roundup now and then. I'll be hitting it again in a week or two to clear the worst of it before the landscapers move in. Plastic sheets will almost irreversibly destroy the microbes and all of the goodness in the top layer of your soil. Don't do it.... at least weeds can be removed. Re: Can this prevent weed growing? 4Jan 13, 2010 11:50 pm do a quick search on this. Fu Manchu as a username, weedmatt as a key word. the tool for it is in the top right of the forum page A big mistake to use it Re: Can this prevent weed growing? 5Jan 13, 2010 11:54 pm Will it stop weeds? No! Well not unless you have a commercial wholesale nursery and that is the floor covering with nothing else on it. Just try and plant something or weed the garden when it has been down a year or two, you'll go mental from it! anyine who tells you different is dreaming. However great under pebbles in sandy soils to stop the pebbles working into the sand. Re: Can this prevent weed growing? 7Jan 14, 2010 4:40 pm I have it under pebbles with plants and it still give me the s**ts. Mind you I did find it useful though for breaking the cycle of some perennial weeds in the garden beds i was renovating. I then ripped it out at the first opportunity. Newspaper is much better as it actually breaks downs. Re: Can this prevent weed growing? 8Jan 14, 2010 11:19 pm news paper should also be left out because even though it does break down, it still inhibits the free passage of water and oxygen to the root zone. Even if the paper is wet, water will move along it not so much through it. Best shredding the news paper and having it under fresh green mulch so the worms can get fat guts on it = much healthier garden still. Recently I moved to a 30 year old house and found within few months there are small brown nests in the brick mortar and few small round holes in few places of brick… 0 22680 Hi all, has anyone been ask to do the weeds in their property while in the middle of build?
