Browse Forums Landscape & Garden Design 1 Jan 09, 2010 11:13 pm our fountain out the front (I believe) uses at least 4 ltrs a day of water, if left on all day (I won't make that mistake again either)!! Does anyone else find this, or is it just my fountain, hence get another one more efficient? As a result, we hardly ever turn it on now... A thankful person is a happy person. No one really seems to think off this angle when designing a water feature or choosing one more to the point. Any feature that has water running across a surface is going to experience huge evaporation. Particularly water walls and feature pots in ponds where the water runs out the pot and down the sides into the pond. Small cascades in pretend creek systems also will loose water when ever it goes shallow. Any feature that has a spray or something will also lose a heap of water but mostly to water being blown out of the pond. Then there is water loss due to splash from the pump/fountain attachment. I love a garden near us that has a limestone wall in a u shape with capping. It is a trough and runs the way around the front of the property. It is loaded with fairly still water and heaps of water plants and loads of frogs call it home. The evap would be minimal for the volume of water. Re: Does your fountain use a lot of water too? 6Jan 10, 2010 4:13 pm I want a fountain like the one in the foreground here: http://i904.photobucket.com/albums/ac244/englyn_photo/fountain.jpg just a large bowl with one jet of water. I don't think it's turned on in this photo though. That shouldn't evaporate too much. Anyone like to guess where I took this photo? It's one of the most famous gardens in the world Re: Does your fountain use a lot of water too? 7Jan 11, 2010 8:16 am We just got one of those water walls with the copper back. Looks great and very happy with it but it uses a heap of water if left on 24/7. We now have it on a timer and it comes on when we come home from work and turns off before we go to bed. Not having it on in the middle of the day has helped a lot. Does anyone know if we are damaging the pump turning it on and off like this though? Also does anyone have any fish in their feature and do you know what's involved to keep them alive. We have oxygenating plants in ours but no biological filter. Thanks! Re: Does your fountain use a lot of water too? 8Jan 11, 2010 9:11 am yeah we put a timer on ours, haven't got it working yet (lazy dazy!) but I was thinking only for 2hrs a day, but what a great idea to make it at night, less wind, exposure etc - thanks for that gizben! A few splashes, a hot windy day and we blew up our motor not once but twice We have a fountain inside this time. now that's a smart idea, or even in the alfresco!!! Now you're thinking class!
