Browse Forums Landscape & Garden Design 1 Jan 04, 2010 11:23 pm Okay so a keen gardener at work assisted me to identify my hedge as a golden privet.. The problem is it looks fantastic across the side of the driveway but along the front I have some dead patches this is the driveway side half trimmed back: http://i1015.photobucket.com/albums/af2 ... ure555.jpg see the dead parts here in the middle: http://i1015.photobucket.com/albums/af2 ... ure549.jpg What is the best way of fixing this issue? Do I have to dig out the dead bushes and replace them? or is it possible to trim them back and encourage growth? What would have caused this? Re: help save my hedge 2Jan 05, 2010 8:01 pm Pretty hard to make a call on cause of death Yeah it really is Root disease is a common cause but you'd be doing Australia a favour by removing the hedge and using something else It is a weed problem in most of Australia and isn't really supposed to be sold in responsible garden centres. Regular clipping is the go, feed the soil up and use a shredder to dump the clippings back underneath which in this case will be fine and better than dumping elsewhere Take out dead growth by digging out or clipping out. All through the year with any hedge do intermittent thinning out by clipping random hard wood throughout. So cut into the hedge in a way. This will alllow soft wood to regenerate and you don't get a hedge with hard woody bits very close to the surface of the hedge. you want healthy soft growth instead. I do like the shape and consistency of the hedge along the driveway side and I would definitely keep that part. I've got plenty of bricks laying around, they are in the ground as small paved areas all over my block. it is ridiculous.. what sort of ideas do you have for lining the edge of a garden bed adjoining the footpath? I was thinking of using bamboo edge or perhaps some low growing plants? I don't like the look of bricked edges or stones or sleepers.
