Browse Forums Landscape & Garden Design Re: My vegie garden 181Jul 04, 2011 9:51 am Good on you Lisa....mushrooms are fun to grow but you had better like them a lot or have friends/neighbours who do, because when I've grown them it's either a feast or a famine. Taste great though!! Have you got a worm farm going yet? Mine is well underway now and producing quite a lot of worm wee that will be used as a fertiliser...I'm storing it in clean 3 litre milk containers so anyone snooping around the yard might be a good idea not to drink that brown stuff in the milk bottles!!! LOL I chose to put them between the HWS and the rainwater tanks (on the slab) because it's under the eaves so therefore protected from rain and the HWS, rainwater tanks, side boundary fence and house protect on all sides from the wind. They seem happy little vegemiters on their new home as they were treated badly by their previous owner who didn't have a clue and didn't bother to get further info on how to care for them. Her loss was definitely my gain! Re: My vegie garden 182Jul 04, 2011 2:48 pm Thanks Lisa. You can start your day with a scrambled egg with bacon and mushroom. Lunch with grilled mushroom salad. Snacks with mushroom pies and tarts. Dinner with that add to casseroles, mushroom soup. Just endless. Spring is here! Hurray! Re: My vegie garden 183Jul 04, 2011 4:09 pm Mushrooms on toast is really yummy esp if you add some home grown thyme!! Re: My vegie garden 184Jul 16, 2011 4:22 pm It's been a couple of weeks since I took some pics of my vegie garden and things are growing wonderfully Now that some of the seeds and seedlings are getting bigger and looking stronger I can put some more mulch down. You will see eggshells in the beds with the Broccoli and Cauliflowers, I put them there as I heard a viewers tip on Gardening Australia that it can help to keep the white moth away as it thinks that there is already one there and flies away. Lets hope it works. As a few people know, for a while I've been wanting to get some chooks for my backyard. Not only do they produce eggs and lots of good fertiliser for the garden but they are awesome pets as well! A guy I used to work with said he much preferred his chooks to his dog as they were so fascinating to watch. The first step to owning chooks is to ensure have somewhere safe and secure for them to live. A month or two ago I found the ideal chook house for my backyard but as it's the middle of winter (not an ideal time for buying new chooks in Melbourne) I wasn't in a hurry to buy it. This week the store was having 20% off store wide so I went forth and purchased!! Today I assembled it, after a bit of swearing, lots of frustration and 3 broken nails I now have an assembled Chook House and run!! Mine won't house chooks but a couple of ducks so will need a small pond for bathing as well, think I'll dig a hole and use one of those kids clamshell-type sandpits. Need to do side fence and gate to make the yard secure before doing anything else, even though I live in a dog-free estate everyone (except me) has at least one dog, quite a few have two or more, and already I've had shoes chewed and lost a pair of Colorados that I left at 'my' kitchen door. Got more fish last week so they are still in quarantine and can go in with the others shortly, then have to fence the fishpond from future ducks. Nothing beats a nice fresh egg or two, each day. Love your raised garden beds and thinking I might do something the same if I can get some pallets. Do you have a worm farm(s)? I was given a second one on Saturday, have to collect it from son's as he did the pickup for me, but the first one is going great and producing quite a lot of worm wee for the garden, as well as castings. Re: My vegie garden 190Jul 18, 2011 10:18 am Wow - very productive - lots of good growth going on!! Love the chook house/run too!! I'm really starting to create the kind of backyard I've wanted since I moved in. Happy Camper I'd be careful of the chook houses on ebay - they are made of fir wood and will warp and are pretty poor quality, that's why I spent a few $$'s more and got one made out of recycled plastic 'A bottle of wine contains more philosophy than all the books in the world.' Well done I liked your mushroom box too and saw one like it at bunnings, so we got one. I think I might be a week or so behind you, so I am looking forward to seeing your mushies and anticipating mine Ours is just buttons, no other types. Re: My vegie garden 195Jul 18, 2011 8:52 pm Love the chook house (Can't believe that is plastic!) We have a little one for a couple of chooks too, we got some week old chicks from an egg hatching they had at my DS's preschool. Raised them, they were so cute and tame- then one turned out to be a rooster so we gave them away as a pair, they were good mates by then and we didn't want to split them up. It's a lot of fun to get them as babies though...but next time we'll be getting sexed day old chicks. Your vegie gardens are great, that was something I was supposed to get on with this Winter. I have some colourbond left over from the roof, hopefully enough!! Re: My vegie garden 197Jul 20, 2011 1:53 am The best chook houses I've seen made have been from left over materials or recycled materials.
