Things are going great guns for most of the plants but my spinach doesn't seem to have really grown much, thankfully it's not looking sick so hopefully with a few slightly warmer days it will start to take off. Today I spent a bit of time out in my patch putting up string lines for the climbing plants of broad beans and snow peas to grow up and put some extra mulch down now that they have grown a bit higher. I also gave them a good watering of seasol and molasses In other garden news, yesterday I spent about 2.5 hrs weeding my front yard! Soooo many little weeds that needed pulling out - I almost filled up two 60 litre bins and my front yard isn't very big! I've spread the weeds out over a future garden bed to compost down and add nutrients to that part of my garden. No pics though, I will try to get some during the week. You've have shown that it IS quite possible to grow your own fresh produce in a small space! Have to agree here, you started with such a small space and have used it so well. I feel bad now that i've still been to lazy and not order the soil we need to fill our other veggie beds! Although our patch of spinach and snow peas did quite well as a test on our abilities. We should have jumped right in like you! Keep it up! NO EXPECTATIONS, NO DISAPPOINTMENTS! Re: My vegie garden 215Nov 08, 2011 12:05 pm My tomatoes are finally planted! I had the day off work yesterday which gave me some time out in the garden. I had to fork over the whole area and pull all the weeds out which took about an hour to do and then plant the tomato seedlings in their paper pots. I then covered them all with milk cartons to try to stop the slugs n snails from getting them and my chooks. I also put my wine barrels in position for where I want to put my lemon and lime trees so that I didn't end up putting tomatoes where I wanted to put them All up I planted 4 Beefsteak plants and 11 Roma tomatoes There are a lot of runner weeds in the area of the tomatoes so I need to buy some weedkiller and spray them all as I just couldn't get rid of it all. I will also fence the area off from the chooks Big thanks to Melissa, Kirsten and Russell for saving all their milk bottles for me! My vegie garden is late but with a long summer it will just mean most vegies will produce later, rather than earlier. I've got seeds started in all kinds of containers, then put these into a currently disused fishtank and it works like a mini hothouse. Watering the seeds with a weak worm tea has made them germinate within a week, due also to the humidity. I have to go and cart some more treelopper mulch but it's far too hot to do that today, no mechanical means of loading so it's a shovel job to load, and again to unload. Can't complain because the mulch is free and less than 1klm away. For the vegie garden mulch I'm hoping the treeloppers haven't been dumping new mulch where the older stuff that is breaking down, has been uncovered. Last week I sprayed the front yard, it's going to be a 'no lawn' area with lots of natives..and again more treeloppers mulch!! Gotta love it at the price!! Looks good too...imho!! Re: My vegie garden 217Nov 08, 2011 12:32 pm That sounds great Happy Camper! I like the idea of the old fish tank too, that's clever indeed! I'm in two minds now do I plant some more seeds for zucchini's and other things or just buy some seedlings? I'm wondering if I've left it too late, I might just do some seeds and see how they go. I'm also thinking about growing some Basil on the edge of my tomato plants as a bit of a border. I will also plant some sun flowers from seeds after I kill off all the weeds and I will also mulch in a week or two as well - just need to kill all these running weeds first! I'm thinking I might buy some corn though as my seeds haven't done anything 'A bottle of wine contains more philosophy than all the books in the world.' Louis Pasteur Vegie garden: viewtopic.php?f=19&t=27637&start=0 My Backyard Adventure Re: My vegie garden 218Nov 08, 2011 12:53 pm With all vegies I like to plant a new lot of seeds about 2-3 weeks after the previous lot because your cropping season is stretched further that way. Another way is to get early tomatoes, mid-season tomatoes and late season tomatoes...using tomatoes as the example. I think I planted either 7 or 8 different types of tomatoes...red/green/stripe/white/yellow/etc and I'm guessing these will fruit over a longer period, although my aim is to have a tomato salad with all the different shapes and colours. Jamie Oliver served it on one of his shows a few years ago and it looked fantastic...just sliced or diced tomatoes!! I put some pumpkin seeds directly into the ground last Saturday, Butternuts and another one which I think is called Pink Aussie, it's the one I like most for Pumpkin Soup during winter. The corn seeds I planted are Red, didn't have yellow seeds on hand but must get some. Beetroot seeds are regular round red, round white and cylindrical red...again just for a change!! I could eat beetroot and tomatoes all day!!!! I bought the seeds on eBay from a lady in Toowoomba, she has fresh seed and really fast getting them in the mail, I've bought from her for a few years. If you haven't already, see if you can get some yellow zucchini seeds...they look great in a stir fry with green zucchini. Still taste the same just look more inviting. Like you, I need to plant Basil with the tomatoes more for insect control than anything else because I can't eat it...gives me a migraine!! Other seeds I planted are lebanese cues, rhubarb, spring onions, red and green lettuce. A nice variety, the reason for colours is to get 2 x DGD's more interested in eating vegies which they shy away from at present. I'm not holding out too much hope of my vegie surviving because of the feral kids over the back fence who continually kick a soccer ball into my yard then climb over the 1800mm high fence to retrieve it. Of course, my side of the paling fence is the non-railed side but that doesn't stop them and I don't expect they will show any respect for my garden...they don't respect anything else!!
