Browse Forums Landscape & Garden Design 1 Dec 13, 2009 3:38 pm We've met with our landscaper for the second time today and have refined some details (read: slashed a few things from the plan to save $$$ ) and should get the revised quote back in the next week, then hopefully be booked in for a Feb start. We're looking at teakwood sandstone pavers with a contrasting dark grey grout, and a rendered raised planter - colour yet to be decided.
Behind the planter, we plan to have a feature wall in three sections. Kind of hard to describe, but our side fence runs at a slight angle and we don't want the feature wall to follow that angle. So we're going to split it into three separate walls, with the ones at either end costructed from either hardwood slats or possibly bamboo, and the centre section is to be a feature of some kind. This is the bit we're not sure about, and I need some ideas.... There's stackstone or ashlar stone or render with some sort of feature attached or plonked in front. But I'm thinking that maybe some tiles would look a bit spesh, and that our DIY skills are probably up to the job, assuming we get the structure built by a professional. So I need ideas please - what outdoor feature tiles have you seen on facades or walls or anywhere else that might work? Come on, show me your brilliant ideas...... Adrian, I'll try to take a photo later ....not much to see at the moment though. Just dust, weeds and a Colorbond fence. The layout is more or less like this, although the screen will be altered from a single angled length to three sections parallel with the house. I haven't had a chance to change the plan yet: Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ By the way, the screen isn't going to be 12m high.... That's a typo. It'll be about 2.4m. If it were me, would do the 2 sides in a Bamboo, then paint the centre wall in a really striking paint colour, then glue or drill some tiles onto the wall in some paten formation. Any tile will do, go to a large tile shop and look for some you like. I wouldn’t do the whole wall in tiles. You have the opportunity to do more than just tiling here. Feb will be here before you know it. Not sure if this is what you are talking about, photo taken from one of the old blogs. Bamboo on either side and painted blue board in the middle. Not sure if the green is right for your place how about purple? you can buy really nice wrought iron thing's that would look nice on the painted bit (if you are into that). I think Stack Stone looks good too. I think Stack Stone looks good too. It's similar, except the three sections really will be separate to each other, and kind of offset. I'd draw it up in Photoshop to explain better, but that program got trashed in my laptop rebuild, and I don't know where the discs are to reinstall it... I like the wrought iron feature idea, but the other half hates it. Pfft.... what would he know? Stackstone is good in small amounts, but I'm getting a bit sick of it. Did I just say that? We were originally thinking merbau for the side panels, but in the interests of cost-cutting, bamboo was one option we discussed on the weekend. Just waiting for the revised quote to come in to decide for sure. Michelle, I like the way you're thinking.... a rendered panel is what we're looking at, and I have to decide on a colour (do I pick something to complement the purplish render on the facade, or do I aim for something in the turquoise family, to go with the feature wall in the family room? ) I agree that tiling the whole thing would be a bit boring; I'll have to look out for some inspiration. The whole thing needs to fit with our tropical and ever-so-slightly Balinese feel. I have plenty of time to come up with ideas, but I don't want to leave it till the last minute. I also have to convince my husband that cladding the entire thing with stackstone is *yawn* old hat. If anyone else has any stunning pics, please share. Leave it with my kek, I’ll give it some thought, and your tiles need to be a little different now than just any one like I said before. I’ll see if I can come up with some pics for you. Got a pic of the back of your house? Are you in yet? If not, show me a pic of the render colour on your house, we need to work with that! Been in for a year now..... just dragging our feet on the whole finishing-off thing. The area where the feature wall will be is actually the side of the house....which is pretty much all the back yard we have. To give you an idea, this was taken before the fences went up: The long window to the right is in the family room - I'll be planting something lush against the fence so we have a nice green outlook (Soooo sick of looking at that fence! ). The big window is in the dining area, which is open plan with the kitchen/family room, so all the same room anyway. Then we have bifolds opening from the dining and from the lounge onto the al fresco room. The planter box/feature wall will be where the fence is. Feature wall in the family room is Wattyl Castle Keep, and it's visible from the al fresco room. The render on the front of the house is a colour I can't find online (specialist render company, now changed hands and using different colours ), but it's a dull purple. Sometimes aubergine, sometimes a bit reddish-purple, depending on the light. Looks like this: Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Hmm, what else....? Spouting/fascias and the beam across the al fresco opening are all Ironstone. We have timber windows and doors in the al fresco, but the rest are aluminium - stone beige. Pavers look like being sandstone....the area faces north, so plenty of light. We already have a large hardwood table and directors chairs which are upholstered in navy - those will be staying for a while. The Balinese thing is not to be too OTT - I want modern, but with some lovely tropical Balinese touches. We will be adding a small thatched hut thingie down in the back corner eventually, just big enough to fit a medium-sized daybed.... somewhere nice to sit in the shade. I don't think my husband gets it - I'm sure he's visualising Buddha heads and heavy carved timber furniture everywhere. Not to worry, I hardly ever let him have a say anyway. I think it was your wall that was my original inspiration for the three panel idea. That's a bit like what we're aiming for, with the central panel built of blueboard and rendered. But I'm now leaning towards a tiled feature on that rendered section.... To add to the ideas file for anyone else who's looking..... I came across this piece of art, which I quite like as a feature : Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ The other half vetoed anything like that though. Oh well, back to my tile feature then.... The glass will shine through the day, should look pretty. Or, you just use the traditional wall tile. I’ve looked on the net but can’t find these really nice ones. I put these tiles in a clients master bathroom not long ago. Something like the swirly feature tile would work for you. They are a gloss tile, which is what you might need for external use. This is my photo from the tile shop.
