Browse Forums Landscape & Garden Design 1 Dec 09, 2009 9:55 pm Hi everyone, We have a block with a water meter (preexisting from demolished house) and have kept some of the 40 year old camellias. I have tried to connect the garden hose to the water meter but it leaks everywhere, I think because of the pressure?? What do I need to connect the water meter to a garden hose successfully? At present am carting bottles of water from home to the block to keep camellias happy, but would rather just use a hose Asked at Bunnings they were not able to help Thanks Re: How do you connect a water meter to a garden hose? 2Dec 09, 2009 10:39 pm Use brass fittings or agricultural fittings. The end of the metre will have a thread. Undo any existing fittings from the end and get a brass reducing bush from reece or galvins. Then you will be able to attach a 3/4" tap to the metre or attach the pipe of chosen type. You will be best to use some thread tape. start at the bottom of the thread and wrap it in the direction of the thread to the end. Go the other way and it will leak. Use gas tape if you can, it is thicker. It is yellow. If you bought thread tape at the place you mentioned then I bet it was white and you can see what has happened Use Pink or yellow tape or at least a decent quality tape. The ag fittings can be found in irrigation shops. They will handle the pressure. You may also be able to connect some blue line ag pipe to the metre. That would be ideal Use a post to mount the tap on. you can also use a nylon ball valve to use as a tap for maximum flow. They are often used in nurseries. You will also be fine to use some white PVC pipe that is "class 12" at least (thick wall). Glue using irrigation glue not plumbing glue. Again, use a ball valve rather than a brass tap at the end mounted off a post. Geeze i wish I had a photo on hand to show you Re: How do you connect a water meter to a garden hose? 3Dec 09, 2009 10:54 pm You would also be able to just screw a nylon ball valve to the back of the water metre. It would be a big ball valve, but it would go straight on. Then use a male to male coupling and screw a tap nut on. A tap nut is the bit that screws onto a tap so you can click a hose on. Re: How do you connect a water meter to a garden hose? 4Dec 09, 2009 11:05 pm Oh and use 25mm pipe if using PVC. Because of the high pressure, I'd suggest using an 18mm hose. A bigger hose than normally found in the garden. If you use the smaller regular garden hose, get the Gardena hose tail connector that is fancy looking. It has a twist function, just click it on and twist and it will not blow off. It just wont Re: How do you connect a water meter to a garden hose? 5Dec 09, 2009 11:10 pm The ball valve I was talking about. The camellias and I thank you Re: How do you connect a water meter to a garden hose? 7Dec 11, 2009 2:04 pm Got a pressure reducing adapter (actually for connecting drip systems has integrated bush ) for $8 - worked well no leaking - probably not a long term option but should last a month or so until builder hooks up the meter to a tap .
