Re: Camellia Hedge 4Nov 27, 2009 12:58 pm Quote: the hedge will be on the south side of a colorbond fence, fence running east west. Good drainage and soil, beds are 400mm wide by 400mm deep Quote: Virtually any Camellia sasanqua will fit the bill I have had mention that Yuletide is a ripper for what you are after with a strong red flower, kind of unusual for sasanquas Mostly they are whites and pale pinks that you find in retail garden centres. I googled this and it should also help you a little with some contacts for good Vicco growers of Camellia http://www.burkesbackyard.com.au/2002/a ... nica_hedge Re: Camellia Hedge 5Nov 27, 2009 3:40 pm Love Camellias! I have planted a hedge along the back of my alfresco with the one named "Hiryu". Lovely hot pink flower. I had them ordered through my favourite nursery after researching a bit online. i found this helpful too... http://www.camelliagrove.com.au/camellias-developed.php I can't wait for them to flower....I hope it looks as good ad i am imagining. Good luck with it all. Re: Camellia Hedge 6Nov 27, 2009 3:48 pm keep them clipped up and they will flower very heavily for you. Expect them to flower with the arrival of the cold weather next year. We have same the orientation here but with Pittosporum along it and they were nearly wiped out ealier this year because of the radiated heat. Camellias like to be in shade (which they will be) and their roots kept cool. A balanced diet is chocolate in both hands. The redder the flower the more tollerant they will be. Everyone wants Pittosporums? Everyone wants Pittosporums? Lots of better options Gimme some options then, Fu... I want screening plants for my back fence, and if we don't go for Pittosporums or Lilly Pillys *ducks*, what else can I use? Colourbond fence, east side. Oh, and it's a bit narrow too. *waits* *taps foot impatiently* Re: Camellia Hedge 10Nov 27, 2009 7:08 pm well the Vibernum tinus is a far more reliable option. I would also see if you can track down a feijoa. An amazing hedge that and if you can kill it, well your just mean Grevillea olivacea is a ripper. Although it grows in dry sandy soils it performs well enough in a range of soil types. Faster growing than the other popular rubbish alternatives It has a leaf structure that is perfectly suited to handling heat and in it's native habitat it gets bloody cold too. Re: Camellia Hedge 11Nov 28, 2009 10:07 am Feijoa? I really fancied one of those, but never thought of a row or hedge.... the grevillea might be an option too, I'll go Google, then start checking suppliers. Thanks, Fu! I did see a really nice Lilly Pilly hedge nearby this morning..... Re: Camellia Hedge 12Nov 28, 2009 9:52 pm I've got several camelia hedges on the go. But they're so sloooooow to grow. The best one's managed about 30cm a year. Last year some of them hardly seemed to grow at all. This year several doses of Powerfeed seems to have woken a few of them up Do the hard jobs first. The easy jobs will take care of themselves. - Dale Carnegie Re: Camellia Hedge 13Nov 28, 2009 10:12 pm yep they grow at a snails pace Worth while as a hedge if you are patient and can grow them where you live Re: Camellia Hedge 14Aug 15, 2011 7:25 am nice post... i just planted 24 camellias as a hedge on the weekend. i only planted them 70cm apart.... does anyone know if this is going to be bad.. only thought bout it after... i only want them about 1.8 high Project History Deposit - 20/4/2010 Land Settled - 20/8/2010 Council - 30/9/2010 Slab - 17/11/2010 Bricks - 28/01/2011 Roof - 5/02/2011 Gyprock - 4/03/2011 Re: Camellia Hedge 15Aug 15, 2011 6:24 pm Its fine. They will compete for nutrients in years to come and that will slow their growth right down. Just stick to using organic compost, straws and tree prunings as a mulch and they will be sensational for years to come, well provided your not in Coastal WA or SE South Australia. Re: Camellia Hedge 16Sep 06, 2011 10:17 pm Hi Guys, Here is a pic of my recently completed new camellia susquana hedge (jenifer susan) Prep work done was Digging a 50cm trench the whole length of the hedge to facilitate drainage in the clay soil and. Sprinkle gypsum on clay trench. Fill entire length of trench with garden mix from sand and soil. Then place camellia on top of garden mix and continue to surround with remaining mix. Sprinkle camellia fertilizer around Mulch around WIll take some more pics in year time to give you an idea of progress. At time of planting they are mostly single stalk leggy specimens about 30-40cm tall Project History Deposit - 20/4/2010 Land Settled - 20/8/2010 Council - 30/9/2010 Slab - 17/11/2010 Bricks - 28/01/2011 Roof - 5/02/2011 Gyprock - 4/03/2011 Re: Camellia Hedge 17Sep 07, 2011 6:47 pm I love my sasanqua camellia hedges. I have established a hot pink hiryu also out from my lounge window. I also have several other varieties of white ones tucked in between trees in my front garden. I like my privacy. The Hiryu ,s are growing very well.
