Browse Forums Landscape & Garden Design 1 Nov 22, 2009 10:39 pm I planted a Euculaytus Leucoxylon Rosea Dwarf (Dwarf Eucalyptus) during spring and it took off and is still healthily growing…except that two weeks ago it got a serious tilt to it…I then noticed that the trunk was deformed. It’s pretty weak around ground level…does anyone know what’s wrong with it…and really is it worth struggling with it if it’s always going to end up sickly? I’m happy to cut my losses and replant with another native. General photo…it’s about 0.5 metres tall… Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Deformed trunk… Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Cheers, Mike mmm....donuts Homer Simpson 1956- Links: Site Costs Ready Reckoner | H1 Addiction Medical Advice | Château TDL: The Backyard Re: Should I euthanise a Eucalyptus…advice needed... 2Nov 22, 2009 11:43 pm na mate it's supposed to be like that. Eucs have a sort of root system and trunk that has a way of coping with damage. They are called "lignotubers" and the lumpy bits would be developing dormant buds (epicormic buds). This is so that if it is damaged by fire or flood, it can regenerate fast from those areas at ground level. It will shoot from there. You'll get a heap of shoots that will form multiple trunks in time. A common feature on Mallee and smaller Eucs. If it is on the lean I wouldn't worry. Let it go, it will strengthen up enough. Re: Should I euthanise a Eucalyptus…advice needed... 3Nov 22, 2009 11:50 pm Oh and it would have gone on the lean quick with the warm change you've had in the weather. It would have put on a good spurt of growth and got a bit top heavy. If that is a concern, cut the side shoots a bit but don't stake it. It is totally possible it has a poor root system because most Eucs develop poor roots in stages of early growth, (in tubes). Way before most people buy them. Sometimes the bigger ones don't have those probs become evident till it blows over in a storm 20 years later. You won't need to be concerned with that from the little fella If it does go to poo on you, chop it just above those nodules and a heap of new shoots will come up I have some in pots out the back here and a few went to poo. I just lopped the top off and away they went again. Then I singled out a good strong stem and cut the rest off Re: Should I euthanise a Eucalyptus…advice needed... 4Nov 23, 2009 9:14 am Fair 'nuff Fuey...
