I have an old hedge at the front fence. When I bought the house the hedge only had a little green top of leaves and the rest was just a mass of dead twigs. I ripped out all the dead twigs, chopped off most of the top and waited.
The hedge grew back reasonably well. I then widened the garden bed. At that, all these little shoots sprang up and started growing like mad. Now I have a "two-layer" hedge: the old hedge row at the front that's about 2m tall, and a new row from 30cm to 90cm tall.
My problem is how do I trim it ? I'm not sure what to chop or where to chop it for the best & thickest growth. It's old section is about as tall as I need it, but parts are still thin.

(In the first pic on the far left you can see my sad & sorry over-fertilised grapefruit tree which was the subject of another post)
