Browse Forums Landscape & Garden Design Re: Recommend me a push mower please! 2Nov 15, 2009 8:23 pm There is only one that cuts it so to speak. The Flymo. Get the catcher, sold separately. Not using a catcher will cause a build up of thatch below the leaves of the turf. This will cause water repellency, fungal disease (not always but sometimes) and a spongy lawn. The other argument for this though is that the decaying lawn clippings add nutrients back to the soil. Seems to be fine on very large areas like ovals and golf courses but in home gardens it doesn't always workout so well I have had many other brands before and don't ever mind using a push mower, it's good exercise The one that really does the best available in Australia is the Flymo. Way better than Alko and other common brands They tend to skid across the turf too much. The wheels in time will polish off. The flymo still grips and have a better quality cut Re: Recommend me a push mower please! 3Nov 15, 2009 8:34 pm This is what I would really like to get http://www.mowermagic.co.uk/acatalog/TH ... Re: Recommend me a push mower please! 6Nov 22, 2009 8:45 am I've got a Flymo and second the advice about keeping it sharp. With sharp blades it slices through like butter. Blunt blades increases the effort required by orders of magnitude. I just got the blades sharpened. The girl at the shop said that they get lots of people coming in with cheapie push mowers where the blades assembly can't be taken out. That means the blades can't be sharpened and makes the mower a "throw away" unit. Do the hard jobs first. The easy jobs will take care of themselves. - Dale Carnegie Re: Recommend me a push mower please! 7Dec 03, 2009 9:55 pm Any mower; SHARPEN the blades regularly, it's like servicing you car, DO IT! Re: Recommend me a push mower please! 8Apr 02, 2010 8:00 am Is it just me or does the Flymo push mower scalp buffalo grass? I have SW and bought the Flymo H40 and am having a hard time pushing it through the thick grass. With the maximum height at 38mm I had no choice but to return it. Re: Recommend me a push mower please! 9Apr 02, 2010 11:30 am 40mm of clearance should be ample for cutting turf with some length. Most contract mowing guys set the mowers at 10mm. What might be happening is leaving it too long between mows? If you take more than a 3rd of the leaf off the lawn will brown and look scalped. This can also be enhanced by too much water, heaps of high nitrogen fertilisers (a great reason to adopt my no fertiliser approach) and also warm weather. The time frame for mowing will vary throughout the year. For a buffalo I'd be doing it weekly for perfection, Fortnightly for nice and monthly will give a brown scarified look to it. For couches, weekly and even twice weekly is the only way to keep the stuff nice. Re: Recommend me a push mower please! 10Apr 02, 2010 11:32 am I'm trying to find someone in Australia who does a weighted push mower.
