Browse Forums Landscape & Garden Design 1 Nov 06, 2009 12:08 pm On the weekend my wife bought 2 Strelitzia nicolai: "White Bird-of-Paradise" and planted them in our side garden and I didn't even know until last night. They are about 1 meter from the house so I'll keep an eye out for suckers etc. We have sea-sol'ed them until now and I am just wondering what sort of fertiliser do I use? Just the normal organic fert? Some sort of plam fert? A brand description would be great. Now, obvouisly I don't want them to get to there full potential height (9 to 10 m) so is there anything I can do to prune them in the future? I know it will be a few years off until pruning but do I prune from the base or the leaf? Any assist how help. PS.These can go on the list of other crap she buys without me knowing!! She thinks!! They grow hideously big even in our no structure, no nutrient, crap sands. My grandparents had one in Scarborough, planted in the late 60's. It's still there and has now taken up a large part of the property frontage! Even in the 70's it was massive. I am pretty sure I have posted a pic of one similar in Scarborugh in some thread. As for the suckers, good luck "controlling" them Took me years to kill one of the these from a garden I was fixing up. Way to big to dig up! Couldn't get a mini excavator in. It was only there for a few years too. I guess though, in Melbourne the winters are going to keep that bugger under control, then again our winters are wetter and we get long periods of cold too but at a different time to you guys.
