Re: Change of plans 23Nov 08, 2009 8:12 pm Landscaper #1 came over yesterday. Seems like a good bloke, knows his stuff, had some great ideas. Now we just wait and see what the quote's like. We did make it clear that we don't have pots of money and will probably be doing this in stages, so he said he'd break down the quote so that we can decide which things to do first (or at all). As expected, hflat out from now till Christmas. Landscaper #2 was supposed to come tonight, but rang and postponed to tomorrow. I'm starting to think we may get this thing happening by Easter.... Re: Change of plans 24Nov 11, 2009 7:16 am The second guy finally came last night ....and I have another coming by on Saturday. My next job is to choose a paver, so that they can give us a reasonably accurate quote. After all, there's no point in them quoting on pavers hand-hewn from rare stone, found only on the shady side of the Himalayas, when our budget is more of the coloured concrete variety. I have a feeling this is going to be another OMG moment when I'm confronted with the endless options. We also have to hope that there's zero progress on the vacant block behind us over Christmas, so that we have easy access to the back yard. With a tank in the way on the garage side and only a one-metre-wide gate on the other, getting materials in will be a pain unless we just take out a fence panel at the back.... We're looking at: 50 sq metres or so of paving (plus concrete slab under the section adjoining our al fresco room, which already has a slab), paths of toppings and pavers, laying of our existing pavers at the back, feature wall, and garden beds. I'm having nightmares about the quotes now. Wonder if Santa will bring us a big pile of cash for Christmas? Re: Change of plans 25Nov 17, 2009 9:22 am Status update: We've met with two landscapers and have another coming tonight. We still don't have any quotes. I have to organise myself to go and choose the pavers we want to use, because (obviously) that's going to affect pricing. Maybe if I get my housework finished early today. After going through the process twice now, we've really clarified what we want. Yay! Still no decisions on our feature wall, but at least we have the overall layout figured out. I've put together a rough sketch of our plan, plus a list of what we absolutely need included and what would be nice if the budget stretches a bit further... I'm hoping to receive a quote from landscaper #1 today or tomorrow. I don't know whether to be excited or terrified. Re: Change of plans 26Dec 06, 2009 9:26 am We've got quotes in, and have finally decided on a landscaper. The quote was a bit more than we're prepared to spend, at $21,000, but he's willing to work with us on changing this and that to knock a bit off it. We have a meeting scheduled next weekend, and hopefully we can then lock in a start date for the New Year. Luckily we included pretty much everything we wanted in our brief (knowing that the overall cost would most likely end up over budget), so there's room to chop a few optional extras to get the price down to something we're happy with. We'll source the plants, and do the planting and mulching ourselves to save a little. I'm happy to plant a few things, then add more over time to spread the cost out. We still need to decide on a paver - budget is going to play a part in that decision. I posted the preliminary sketch on another thread, but here it is again for those who care: Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Exciting! Re: Change of plans 27Dec 06, 2009 11:37 am Great news! I think it's supposed to be the length.... we'll likely be cutting that down a bit anyway, to trim the price. The height should be about 2.4m from ground level - fences are already 1.8m, so only 600mm above that; just enought to screen out our view of the infills over the neighbours' bedroom and bathroom windows. lisanne Great news! Do you have a rough start date? We expect work to start pretty much straight after the Christmas break, so hopefully by the beginning of Feb. Then we plan to have LOTS of BBQs ....we've kind of done nothing much in that respect, because apart from the plain concrete in the alfresco room, we just had a big dustbowl for a back yard. The second half of this summer could see our place turn into Party Central. Re: Change of plans 30Dec 06, 2009 1:53 pm Thank goodness! I almost died It will look beautiful when done! Re: Change of plans 31Dec 06, 2009 2:00 pm Bam It will look beautiful when done! Is the cost what you were expecting? We were betting on around the $20K mark, but we don't want to spend more than $18K, so this guy was in the ball park. We figured it's like building a house. You add everything into the quote, whether you think you can afford it or not, then you just go all razor-gang, to get back to a more realistic price. I just want the dust and mud gone.... I'm hoping that once I have fences it will help reduce it a lot and I have a fairly big concreted area - I am sooooooooooo looking forward to getting my BBQ out of the garage and using it! Remember, amateurs built the ark, and professionals built the Titanic." Re: Change of plans 34Dec 07, 2009 7:17 am Lisa, based on our past experience in a new area, the dust will be around for a while - but fences will help a bit, and once you get some plants and mulch in, things will improve even more. Unfortunately, you're stuck with a certain amount of dust until construction of the roads and most of the houses around you is finished. Just keep those microfibre cloths handy.... I actually mop our decking out the front. Hels, there's definitely a lot in our landscaping job, even without plants. Concrete slab to be joined to the existing one, a decent amount of paving, a properly constructed large planter box with a rendered finish, the feature wall, soil, pebbles, a screen to hide the HWS and shed from view, edging, etc, plus labour - we're looking at about a week's worth of solid work - and sub-contractors, equipment hire etc. We also went for someone with appropriate qualifications and a decent portfolio of completed jobs that included some fairly complex work, so we weren't expecting bargain-basement prices. I'm sure there are cheaper guys around, but we want this done right the first time. I wish February would hurry up and come! I'm not the most patient person.... Re: Change of plans 35Jan 10, 2010 1:24 pm In order to get the cost down a bit, we deleted a few things and will DIY them. Step 1 was to build a screen for our utility area. The shed, HWS and our two Weber bbqs are essential items, but that doesn't mean I want to look at them from our outdoor entertaining area. My husband has toiled away in the heat this weekend and it's done: Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ The al fresco room is to the right and the paving will extend out to this area. Once the planter box is in and the garden established, the mess should be almost invisible. The plant was just put there for the photo.... I want a rather large glazed pot, with just the right plant as a permanent feature here. Or maybe a piece of sculpture.... hmm.
