Browse Forums Landscape & Garden Design 1 Oct 28, 2009 11:17 am I have two weeping japanese maples - one purplish/red (Acer palmatum 'Dissectum Atropurpureum' ) and one green (cant remember the exact name but i think it may just be Acer palmatum 'Dissectum') I've had both of these for around 5 years and they are in pots that are next to each other and have been for a long time. This spring when the leaves finally came out, my red one had more green leaves than purple/red so it doesnt look like anything like Acer palmatum 'Dissectum Atropurpureum' in terms of colour. The green one has some leaves with purplish tips in them. Is it because both plants were next to each other? Will it ever turn purplish red again? I have since moved one pot to another part of the garden. Re: Help! My Red Weeping Maple turned Green! 2Oct 28, 2009 8:19 pm It's isn't because they are next to each other, don't worry they can't catch green Look they are going to vary in colour a fair bit over the years. The temps and weather will play a part in that and so will the nutrients they are absorbing. Now if you are in Melbourne or Vicco somewhere, chances are your spring kicked off then you got hoaxed and it went rubbish on you So not as much sun as you'd hope for. When there is a fair bit of shade around or poor light, the plant will need more of the stuff that makes the leaf green to make the goodies it needs. So as a response it is doing just that. It is more than likely it will go redder as the summer swings round and the light gets better. Now for the one that is chucking a purple, that is a common response from plants due to cold. Other examples are White Iceburg roses will get pink flushes early in the season while it is still cold. Kalnchoe (a succulent) will get purple hints to the leaves from the cold. There are some reasons why this happens but I won't bore you guys for a change It is nothing to worry about and they will green up once it warms up Re: Help! My Red Weeping Maple turned Green! 3Oct 29, 2009 9:08 am I sure hope so as I want the purple/red to stay purple/red otherwise it looks like I have 2 of the same variety. Its just that we've had these for 5 years and they have always stayed the same colour and I was thinking they may have gotten mixed up as they sort of "flowered" (some seed like growth on the leaves which looks like you can plant it) if you know what I mean. Thanks...hopefully next year it will come out purple again. Re: Help! My Red Weeping Maple turned Green! 4Oct 29, 2009 2:01 pm Na plants don't work like that They will remain as they were once the causes of the changes are gone. Colour changes will occur if the flowers pollinate each other and then the baby tree will have characteristics of the parents, just like people Re: Help! Stupid weather. I’m restoring all my 40yr old windows and I want to install seals around the casements. I’ve sanded back and oiled the frames with sikkens.
