Browse Forums Landscape & Garden Design 1 Oct 26, 2009 5:52 pm Some help needed, puuleaaaase Our next door neighbour is doing a knockdown and rebuild and replacing a one storey house with two storey house. As we are on the high side of them, we currently look down on them (literally not figuratively ). Existing trees between us are on their side of the boundary fence, but will be cut down as there will not be enough space for them with their new house coming very close to the boundary. With the extra story and tree removal they can look down on us, so for privacy reasons and the fact I like trees, we are going to plant trees on our side. The trees will be planted about 2m from the house, so we don't want anything to damage the foundations. We want something that attracts native birds and for privacy reasons foilage at 2.5m to 4.5m above ground level. Any ideas? Oh, header title is for effect . But also true as they can see through the kitchen window into our bathroom on the other side of our house. Thus, we need some trees...... It is just that you don't have enough clearance for big shady trees. Or do you prefer big shrubs? Regards, Ari Not a fan of palm trees Would consider big shrubs if they meet the criteria Re: They can see us naked - we need some trees 6Oct 26, 2009 6:12 pm viewtopic.php?p=338930#p338930 free will Hmmm, was thinking of something a little greener............ Does is get as high as 4.5m which is what we really need? Re: They can see us naked - we need some trees 9Oct 26, 2009 8:00 pm MBBN bambo? that's what we are going for for privacy.... bamboo a possibility - we are putting a tatami room in the house, so it would go with the Asian feel We have a bit of bamboo in the garden so could try propogating it, though understand this is not that easy which is why the stuff is so expensive in the first place. Re: They can see us naked - we need some trees 10Oct 26, 2009 8:05 pm If there isn't a lot of space, can you attach some lattice or something to the fence and grow a vine/creeper type thing like Jasmine or something? We've got 2.2m from the side of the house to the boundary fence, so a reasonable amount of space to grow something. Issue is because of the slope of our land, we need to get something that grows to 4.5m to get some screening. Slightly off-topic but about to extend and will put a clear glass window in the ensuite. I have worked out it is not overlooked. They are pretty and won't grow too big... although whether they would grow for you, I am not too sure... Also, whether they are big enough for you, I am not too sure either... The pink new growth is very pretty. Regards, Ari Ari & Scott Darwin, NT Re: They can see us naked - we need some trees 19Oct 30, 2009 2:31 pm A very good mate of mine and homeone member was a grower of these many years ago. However the long term results of this plant have been less than favourable in a range of conditions. Short term they are great, as in 5 years maybe ten in some cases, but after that, they look crap no matter what is done to them However they are a stunning, fairly pest free form of lily pilly ... would "I" grow one? No. Ask the council if there is a chance of getting build over easement exemption. Sometimes easements are unused and 24cm is not all that much. Good luck. And yes any builder… 2 13774 Hi VK, Think it's worth investing time in an Owner Builder course to equip you with basic knowledge on Australian Building Industry and its regulations.
