Browse Forums Landscape & Garden Design 1 Oct 20, 2009 6:48 pm These photos are after a Fu Manchu inspired makeover! Our garden and lawn were looking very tired after a not so kind winter (and it was only first planted in December 08). After following Fu's wonderful advice, this is the result, and only after approximately 5 weeks! Thanks Fu, as I have said before, you really are an asset to this forum. Remember, amateurs built the ark, and professionals built the Titanic." Re: Photos of my Front Garden! 7Oct 21, 2009 4:13 pm We actually built them ourselves. We bought the blocks from a place in Bibra Lake: http://www.limestonebuilding.com/lbb/Pr ... Y8WYFOWU4J It is pretty hard yakka though! Our backs were not happy!! Thanks for the kind comments, I realised that I have not posted a photo of the side of my block (as we are a corner block) it is just a continuation of the pittosporum hedge along the limestone wall, with 3 small maple trees planted within the grassed area. I should have put this in the "Show me your garden" thread, sorry about that (mods can move it if they like)! LATROBE 320 WITH DENNIS FAMILY HOMES Re: Photos of my Front Garden! 10Oct 21, 2009 5:45 pm If only my full time employer would have the same opinion, they have no idea what I do... idiots. anyway, you have made my day and I thank you. I bet it is one of the best in the street I do have a small concern with the flowering plums so close to the house. It would be ideal if you could move them out a smidge to roght behind or even in the future hedge (pimelia or hebe?) Just would be better in a few years that's all give 'em a bit more room as they grow It won't look silly once the garden is more established. I can just see what it is going to look like in years to come and the plant selection is spot on for a garden that won't look crap in 3-5years. It is going to just get better and better Re: Photos of my Front Garden! 11Oct 21, 2009 6:20 pm Thanks Fu, your approval means a lot! The plums are about 600 - 700mm away from the house, it does look a lot closer in the photos though. I plan on keeping them pruned to around 2m high anyway, so I was hoping this would be OK in the future. Yep, the hedge in front of the plums is hebe, they have literally doubled in size since I took your advice and added all the goddies to the soil! I am actually planning on planting some more at the rear of the plums to fill the bed up a bit more. My hubby is thrilled, he wants to fork out some cash on a cylinder mower now!! I think the rotary is doing a pretty good job for now, but told him we could look at getting one next year! Re: Photos of my Front Garden! 12Oct 21, 2009 6:33 pm I saw a little Alroh cylinder mower advertised for about $1500 brand new. Check out mower shops though for a second hand one in good nic Re: Photos of my Front Garden! 13Oct 21, 2009 6:48 pm ohh, forgot to add that my hubby who was adding risers to the sprinklers (yep, the plants have outgrown the reticulation!!), said that the amount of worms in the soil now was unbelievable! He couldn't believe the size of some of them! Re: Photos of my Front Garden! 14Oct 21, 2009 9:49 pm I would look at retro fitting those garden beds with subsurface irrigation under the mulch. No water wasted to the air in what is one of the worlds top three windiest cities. If you have those little micro sprays on risers then well over 50% of the water is lost to the air! (It can be as high as 80% in some conditions!) The shrub head sprayers when used on a riser or fitted to a pop up body in a lawn are around 50-60% efficient. You will save a motza on water and the plants will be healthier still. Not only that, no maintenance on them when done well Re: Photos of my Front Garden! 17Oct 22, 2009 11:45 am It is the shrub sprayers that he uses. We have put in a bore, so the water does not cost us any money (for now). I will let him know about the sub surface irrigation and see what he says! He has been very impressed with the results of your advice so far! Also, Fu, I went home last night and checked the actual distance the plums are away from the house and they are 1200mm, so this should be OK, yes? The pavers are a reconstituted limestone from ATLAS paving, the colour is charcoal. We have sealed them so they look shiny!! We paid a fortune for them as an upgrade to what the builder offered. (Scott Park Homes - Grand Franklin) http://www.atlas-group.com.au/coastal_collection.htm Re: Photos of my Front Garden! 19Oct 23, 2009 9:21 am Stick with the shrub sprays for now because subsurface off a bore is a pain. The 1200 will mean you will need to start pruning into a flatter shape. Hollow or at least thin, the centres more if you can too. It will mean bugger all flower next year but the shape in the long term will be much better, so will the flower I have gone to town on mine and it has taken two years to get it the shape it really needs. Very little flower this year and last but from next year on it will get better and better Fig Landscapes has produced an e-book and native plant index, available for purchase from their website.
