We have been watering it every evening (that's what the landscaper advise and thanks to our water tank) and it's been also raining quite a fair bit in Melbourne (We don't water it if it rained) but still doesn't seems to be any greener. After two weeks of laying the turf, we put seasol as well, still doesn't seems to see any results. Any suggestions on how to save this? Whilst there is somewhat green underneath it is mostly brown on top. I have been watering almost every night and it's been raining like crazy too. What's goiing on? Any Ideas Fu? Should I add some fert to the lawn? Seamugus? I have seasol, powerfeed and molasses but nothing? I have sapphire buff. Someone help us!! I did all the soil prep you stated too. Re: Turf turning brown..Help~ 6Oct 13, 2009 10:38 am jcestmoi Yeah, the landscaper who did our lawn put topsoil too. Well then what the hell is going on. The grass in the nature strip, which isn't supposed to be there is green as. Whilst I am in brown town! Re: Turf turning brown..Help~ 7Oct 14, 2009 8:47 pm hold back on the water. You may be over doing it. The soil just needs to stay moist not wet and I know the soils there in Point Cook having grown up near there. Those soils will hold water way more than what our sandy soils do. At this time of year I don't think everyday water is needed at all and especially if it's raining. If it was getting really hot, then yeah, everyday. Too much water in a soil like yours can begin to starve the roots of oxygen and then there can be issues, and that goes for any plant. We are still getting loads of plants over here with brown leaves from over watering or plants that have been in pots in the rain. The plant still absorbs the water but needs to get it away from the roots as far as possible so it goes to the tips of the leaves, the cells swell with water, burst and die making it go brown, but it still stays soft. easy way to tell if it is to little or not enough water causing it. Is it going brown on the edges where the rolls meet? That would be considered normal for any turf. Let it dry a little (not totally) and get applying seasol every weekend You'll get a touch of spring again early next week to help dry the soil a bit. The roots of your turf will grow through it like sticking your finger through the skin on custard. Get some sand dug in as well for those with heavier soils. Can I also suggest getting some YATES anti-rot and get that on there if things are a bit soggy. This will give it it's best fighting chance. Once things warm up and it sends it's roots deeper, it will get going. Re: Turf turning brown..Help~ 11Oct 20, 2009 6:06 am dug through Fu? I dug mine through to about 400/500mm with the dingo (attachment). It's been 6 weeks now and it has just started to grow through the brown. I thought I would have had to mow a few weeks ago but it's only about 1cm taller than when I got it. And when the sun is on it it looks awful. Brown and almost white in some bits but with green growing through underneath. I assume this is normal? Re: Turf turning brown..Help~ 14Oct 20, 2009 10:03 am billdsl So your saying you dig up the grass altogether? What he is saying is that the soil brought in was dug through the existing soil BEFORE laying the turf - this way they all mix together and you don't get layers of soil, but a mix 'A bottle of wine contains more philosophy than all the books in the world.' So my turf is already down, and it has layers, normal soil, with some kind of topsoil on top When should I top dress with the organic gear to level everything up? Sorry to hijack You can't really level it up as the deeds done now but just keep spraying powerfeed on it and maybe some carbon enhancer (Bio-Dynamics etc) and it should seep down to the clay. Don't stress too much though as grass is pretty hardy and the roots of the lawn will go all the way through the top soil and hit the clay soon enough. It will still grown in the clay but it just wont have the same nutrients as the top soil........... I think? Fu, may be able to shed some light on what you can do. Heres what I did: - Mechanically rotary hoed the existing clay soil; - Sprayed some clay breaker and Powerfeed plus added some other ferts (carbon enhancers etc); - Got 13m3 of lawn mix top soil and spread it out over the area; - Used the rotary hoe again (and by hand) and mixed the existing clayish soil with the lawn mix soil so it was all mixed together about 400mm deep; - Got a compactor and compacted it back together; - Spread Seamungus (Fert) over the lot; - Laid the lawn on top; - Lightly Compacted the lawn; - Water with powerfeed. Done. Took about 3 week to do all this on weekends Re: Turf turning brown..Help~ 17Oct 20, 2009 12:51 pm i think im lucky in that i dont have clay, the soil is quite loose, unsure of what its made up of though ive powerfed mine already, its just not very flat for managing with a cylinder mower and was looking to even it up with the topsoil ill be throwing a spray of molasses over it this weekend as well Blog - http://snakedr.blogspot.com/ Build Thread - viewtopic.php?f=31&t=12084&p=307406#p307406 Status - PCI 15/10. Re: Turf turning brown..Help~ 19Oct 20, 2009 6:36 pm Billdsl - Check out Fu Manchu's post regarding topdressing in the Turf Laying Summary Thread: Quote: Oh and for a topdress, this is the stuff and just about only the stuff to use http://www.gardenersdirect.com.au/comme ... nt_id=2135 the picture shows 1m3. You watch how good your lawn goes with that stuff raked into it If you wnat something cheaper for a topdress (and this is for leveling only) then lawn topdress or lawn concentrate from http://www.greenlifesoil.com.au/soils.htm This stuff should get your lawn nice and level...
