I have found many of my small veggie seedlings are getting eaten by slugs and snails once I plant them out so I would be interested to see how other gardeners would deal with this. Keep in mind I won't be using any pesticides etc as this is for an organic garden.
Seedlings like these seem to be quite vulnerable to slugs and snails if they are put in the ground at this early stage but you also don’t want them to die in the small seedling containers. As you can see some of these seedlings are quite tall and maybe were planted too shallow. There is one tray of Rock Melons (on the left) which were grown from a store melon and there is some pumpkins or courgettes in the middle and they look quite strong but the others on the right which are probably tomatoes or celery plus a few other herbs and veggie plants.
So what is the best solution for seedlings that are outgrowing the seedling containers but are too small to put in the ground without some sort of protection from the bugs and elements?
Another option is to transplant the seedlings to a slightly larger container until they are big enough to put in the ground but would this be risky as plants don’t like to be moved too much?
