Browse Forums Landscape & Garden Design 1 Oct 05, 2009 7:37 pm Hello All, We are currently doing up our backyard, and have been asked by our mate that is doing our backyard reno's what sort of plants we would like to have in the 3 garden beds that he has nearly finished..... My other half and I are not green thumbs at all, so we are after more of a low maintenance, easy garden design, without compromising on colours! I do want to have a weeping Mulberry bush in the bigger garden bed, but not sure what other plants would suit this.... I have attached a couple of photos to help you all help me in advising what you would do if it were your garden.... Here are a few more photos of this side of the yard.... I went today to Virginia Nursery, and found some funky black Mondo Grass....thought that maybe I could use this as a sort of hedge along the bricks of the retaining wall??? Other people have said Miniture English Box???? The third garden bed is only a small one.....It is situated next to my children's sand pit.... Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ It runs straight from the sandpit towards the shed along the fence...(It isnt quite finished as yet) I have no idea what to do here, but would like to keep it along the same lines as whatever we do on the other side minus the Mulberry Bush of course.... So, any ideas would be so greatly appreciated...... Thank you in Advance Cathryn Re: Help Me Please!!!! 2Oct 05, 2009 8:45 pm I think youโll regret changing the fence colour to cream; it will be glary and stand out a lot more. The colour that it currently is, it sort of disappears especially after putting some planting in there. I think mondo grass would look good along the retaining wall, sorry but canโt help with plant selection, got no clue myself, lol but I think you should get something that grows tall, maybe to the height of your fence. Re: Help Me Please!!!! 3Oct 05, 2009 9:16 pm Thank you for your reply.... You do have a valid point with changing to the cream.....Will definitely put that forward to my otherhalf. Again, thank you for your reply! Re: Help Me Please!!!! 4Oct 05, 2009 9:44 pm Everyone around me seems to be suggesting cottonwood (hibiscus rubra) as a low maintenance screen thing which would work great to cover your fence and would go with mulberry. Where do you live? I would not think a box hedge and low maintenance went in the same sentence if you want a hedgy thing pick a small native bush and plant lots of them. I quite like these at the moment (see if I can get link to work here...) http://watercorporation.com.au/w/waterwise_plants_perth.cfm?id=483 the dwarf form Re: Help Me Please!!!! 5Oct 05, 2009 9:57 pm Hey there, Thanks for your reply... I live in the northern suburbs of Adelaide. Yeah, as I said before, I am definitely no gardener, and have no idea what English Box is or how hard to look after...lol....Now I know not to go with it...THANK YOU. That link you put up, the plant is a awesome colour.... Thank you will definitley condier it when we make the final decision! Re: Help Me Please!!!! 6Oct 06, 2009 12:08 am Grevillea Olivacea, I have mentioned a few times of late but it really is so well suited to most of Australia, especially North Adelaide in this case. Fast growing dense hedge that attracts wildlife, mainly birds. An exotic plant option might be using Vibernum Emerald Lustre. The bloody leaves will burn a fair bit this summer but summers after that will be fine Big, dark green glossy leaves. Wonderful hedge. Vibernum oderatissima is another very good option Seeing you are plonking in a mulberry, I'd say the Vibernum Emerald lustre would look the shiz along there and be best matched for nutrients and water Thankyou so much ๐ I've decided on White on white for doors and trims, White on white 50% on ceiling and Mt buller for walls. Fingers crossed it will look OK ๐ 2 7148 i had the my concreters concrete right up to the fence. I have pits all along my path, so the water tends to drain away from the house and into the pits.
