Browse Forums Landscape & Garden Design 1 Oct 03, 2009 10:14 am Hi I need some help in planting out a smallish garden bed in front of our bedroom window (about 3m long by 6ocm deep) at the front of our house. It is west facing and about 1km back from the ocean so will cop a lot of afternoon south westerly sea breezes and hot afternoon sun. Ideally I want something that is about 50-100cm tall, doesnt need to have flowers, and not strappy leaved plants... Fu - not sure if you can remember the spot or not? (btw - planted a chinese tallow in the backyard last week) Any suggestions gratefully received Re: Suggestions for west facing garden bed 2Oct 03, 2009 7:43 pm There is two plants that jump to mind Bec. One would just look amazing! It is rare as rocking horse poo though! It is Dianella Rainbow twist This ripper would look really good with the colours of your place. I have some here at mine but that is where they are staying They will be available in 6 months or so I'm told. Currently not a available to WA but being supplied to the eastern States from WA. This would also be a good choice along the wall next to the foot path Very very tough, deep emerald green and will tolerate anything you can throw at it. Cordyline Electric Pink in a few places would also look good. Acacia Honey Bun is very compact as well Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Acalypha spitefire which will be available in a few months. Small and very tough but may look a bit average if it gets really cold. but that is only for a month or two. amazing colour and compact growth. A nice hedge of basil even Very cheap, great spot, you can eat it and it smells great Just there, it may even grow all year. maybe choose a perennial basil which will be easier to find in a month or so. These can be clipped to form box hedges and it is so easy. then you eat the clippings Re: Suggestions for west facing garden bed 8Oct 03, 2009 10:10 pm along the footpath, some blue Lechenaultia which would be gob smacking every spring and can also be clipped if you wanted. You might get some tubes from Xanthorea still, many others have sold out. Another nice choice might be Philotheca (no common name) Borunda beauty or the smaller cascade of stars. These have very fragrant foliage and one hell of a flower show of white flowers. Will do very well at yours. It might be a bit darker in the mornings but the light is still light, so you should be getting it.
