Browse Forums Landscape & Garden Design 1 Jun 19, 2010 4:48 pm Hi, we need to build a retainig wall on the boundary between our place and our neighbour's, and the fence will be erected on top of it. I know that the cost of the fence will be split 50/50, but can we get the neighbour to pay for part of the retaining wall (it is 700mm high, and will be stopping their house sliding down the hill into ours), or am I just dreaming? Re: Splitting cost for retaining wall 2Jun 20, 2010 5:55 pm You could always ask, you never know they might be interested in splitting the costs. It depends on your state and local council regs but the general rule of thumb is usually the persons/owner that altered the level of the ground is the party responsible for the costs of providing a retaining system. This works for both cut and fill situations. Check with the appropriate authorities to be absolutley sure though. Best of luck. Rgds Leonard. Re: Splitting cost for retaining wall 3Jun 21, 2010 3:06 pm Our neighbor's land was filled in a way that it ended up higher, he paid the cost of the retaining wall in full .. but we had to build a higher fence as the 1.8m wasn't covering much .. we shared the cost of the high fence equally .. Depends on your neighbor and how you work it out --- I don't have a signature - just this sentence saying that I don't have one - that'll do! Re: Splitting cost for retaining wall 4Jun 21, 2010 4:49 pm Yep we were told whomever changed the land is responsible 100% for the retaining wall, ie we needed to add fill so we have to wear the cost of the wall 100%. Some things are worth waiting for. Re: Splitting cost for retaining wall 5Jun 21, 2010 5:28 pm As stated above - whoever created the need for retaining is responsible for the cost. The fence is 'usually' split. Our home: viewtopic.php?f=31&t=29960 Thank you again Simeon.. I will call my certifier for that.
