We are planning our backyard, and need some trees on the western side of the garden to form a wind break, as we are in a very windy area.
How do I work out what trees are suitable as a wind break, and how tall do they need to be?

If 5m wide or so you can plant some taller varieties on the fenceline like Wattles, callistemon, maleleuca, Agonis, with some understory species that grow to 1-1.5m to block the lower wind. A lot of farms and rural properties use this in the shelterbelt principal. If you make it too dense however, the inside can get turbulent air and can be just as windy. Re: Wind Break Trees 4Sep 27, 2009 11:43 pm The leytons green are a weed for us. Pretty sure the NGIA (nursery industry) discourages the growing and selling of them. The Ag dept sure does. good point on the dense wind break Not many ever know or take that into consideration If you ever see wind breaks set up in orchards or vineyards, they are often more like big black nets that catch flying cars (or so they look it ) A survey must’ve completed by a certified surveyor.
