Browse Forums Landscape & Garden Design 1 Sep 17, 2009 12:47 pm Hi Just found this site, and it's fabulous! Have just bought a property near Hepburn Springs in Victoria. Although it has native bush on the property, it also has a lot of cleared land around what will be the house and I want to plant some deciduous trees and bushes to shade the house in summer as we will be having large glass windows facing north to collect the winter sun. Any suggestions on plants to use that also have fire retardation benefits ? Many thanks for your input. Re: Planting in fire area 2Sep 17, 2009 1:36 pm Hi kayaroo, Welcome to the forum. We are also building in a bushfire prone area, so I've looked into this a little. Our fire department put out a pamphlet on fire retarding plants... http://www.fire.tas.gov.au/mysite/publi ... ochure.pdf Maybe check with the firies in Vic to see if they have something similar. I also have a CD and book (Grow what where) which lists fire resistant plants. This is of course different to fire retarding though, and just lets you know what will survive a fire, but won't necessarily help your house survive. Fire Tas have actually prescribed distances around our house where we cannot have a lot of vegetation. The first 20m around the house is the building protection zone (where we have to keep fuel to a minimum, only plant fire retardant plants etc) and then we have a fuel modified zone of a further 15m (where we can have more vegetation but have to ensure that it is not too dense). Anyway, hope that helps a little. A local tree nursery has some good stuff on it's web site about suitable trees that are more fire resistant. The link is below. http://www.smalltreefarm.com.au/Fire-retardants.html There are even some photos and examples of fire retardant trees after one of the big fires. Complete with other good info. Hope this might be of use to you both. Re: Planting in fire area 4Sep 17, 2009 9:14 pm Thanks kexkez. That's really useful.
