Thank you for your help with the back garden, we are currently talking to council about removing our tree so everything is on hold until a decision is made there.
Anyway.. we are also wanting to do some work on our front garden. Well "garden" may be a bit of a misnomer.. "planter box" is probably more appropriate.
This is what it currently looks like..

The garden/planter box is directly facing our lounge room which has bifold doors that open right out onto the front area. This area is south facing and as you can see from the pics has a slat style fence which is 1850mm high. The soil area measures 3270mm wide and 730mm deep. The garden bed area is approx 580mm deep (though it may go deeper, not sure).
When it's nice weather we open up the bifold doors and look straight onto this area so I am wanting something attractive and relatively low maintenance.
Currently we have climbing jasmine up the slatted fence and we like the look of it. In summer it is covered with white fragrant flowers so we'd like to keep that if possible. It is starting to look a little "leggy" - not sure how I fix that?
At the front is currently Gardenia Professor Pucci which has been seriously neglected and hasn't flowered for many years. The branches only have leaves on the very top, but otherwise the plants look healthy.
In a moment of creativity I put cobblestones surrounded by mini mondo. This did look great but after a very hot summer while we were away on holidays the whole garden got no water and it has been suffering ever since.
I would really like some ideas as to what I can plant in this area. I have a few requirements and things I want to avoid.
* Would like low maintenance if possible, I always "say" I'll water the plants but don't always do it (naughty!)- though am happy to put irrigation in if neessary to help this garden survive (and thrive!)
* Happy to make whatever soil improvements are needed, fertiliser, mulch, water crystals etc.
* Would like some colour by way of flowers or foliage but the only colour I don't want is purple (sorry purple fans but I don't like purple)
* I don't want succulents (agaves etc) as I already have some potted succulents nearby
* Would like a lush green look with minimal soil areas showing, a mix of different plant levels is fine too, am also open to an appropriate tree if it complements the area.
* Want to avoid agapanthus (!!!)
* Happy to prune and/or fertilise as needed, though am not so reliable on the watering!
Yes, I'm a difficult client.. but I need help! Look forward to your ideas
