Browse Forums Landscape & Garden Design 1 Aug 31, 2009 11:12 pm Hi, I am looking at purchasing about 10 cubes of 20mm drainage gravel and putting it down one side of my house... I have seen it at the display home and it looks effective... My question is... Do I need to buy some form of weed matting or geotextile roll to place under the gravel????? I am sure I need to get something to lay under the gravel but I am unsure what to use, as the product will still need to let the water drain through so cheap old plastic is out... Your advice will be priceless... I live in qld so if it is state specific product please let me know... Cheers Re: Landscaping advice Required... 2Sep 01, 2009 12:01 am Chuck it down, on clay soils, you won't need the "weed mat". A layer of at least 50mm is what is required as a mulch with pebbles or with mulch Less than 50mm and you will see significant evaporation. Get that and the soil becomes hydrophobic to some extent and then that will hamper effective drainage *Please don't use this stuff under pebbles or mulch for the purpose of weed control. Here in the sandy soils weed mat under pebbles is useful because it stops the gravel going into the soft sandy soils/sand (we don't really have any soil ) Then again West Coasters don't have to be too concerned with drainage Re: Landscaping advice Required... 4Sep 01, 2009 12:32 am Yep, you have dense clay soils. (Unless you have loamy gravely soils or sandy soils) you won't need a barrier to stop the pebbles from working into the soil. Re: Landscaping advice Required... 8Sep 01, 2009 11:45 pm Thanks MJL for asking this question... We've been discussing this exact same thing just now... (the weed matting and gravel that is - we're going to put gravel/pebbles down the narrow side of the house) And thanks Fu for the valuable advice. We have clay soils and I was thinking that weed matting was the go but after a quick google search I wasn't so sure - I found a few people who said that it was a waste of $$. It's also handy to know how deep to make it My blog: http://artstitcheshome.blogspot.com Re: Landscaping advice Required... 9Sep 01, 2009 11:48 pm Zoysia is what I consider the future of turf in Australia. This is a misunderstood and underutilised turf variety. This a view also shared by many leading horticulturists and turf managers. However it is also very slow growing and turf farms therefore have a much lower stock turn on it compared to the buffalo's and junkie couches. So they tend to either not grow it, or poo poo it in favour of varieties that will make them more money. Zoysia has a much lower impact on the environment than any other turf. Less mowing for you and that means less maintenance and money spent. Requires far less water than any other as well. Have a squiz at this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t8vPBDtvd9U No doubt you have viewed my threads on the topic As far as my crap misunderstood joke goes, you have to be a Simpsons fan to get it. The 18 second answer lays here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hFgR0m-9 ... re=related ... I'm not with you on that am I? Re: Landscaping advice Required... 10Sep 01, 2009 11:59 pm FU, Thanks heaps for your honesty and info... Last question I promise... Where is the best place to source me some empire in QLD???? I have seen in super cheap down south and I am hoping you can pull a rabbit out of the hat and have some magic contact in QLD... Cheers Re: Landscaping advice Required... 11Sep 02, 2009 12:37 am Where are you in Qld? It is a little big state after all ...compared with the better WA Re: Landscaping advice Required... 15Sep 02, 2009 10:46 pm Whow! questions, questions MJL, You want to ring these guys http://www.turf2go.com.au/ devank, if you are allergic to cut grass it most likely would be the pollen than the grass itself. There is something else that vcan make you itch and I can't recall the name of what it is just now, but it is pretty bad in Kikuyu and traditional buffalo. The soft leaf buffalos don't have very much of it and neither does Empire or Empress Zoysia. However if you have an allergy you have an allergy. Just get a turf that isn't as bad as the others Now the mutts tear up the lawn. Empire most certainly is "self repairing" and by that I think you mean it spreads and recovers where it was damaged? yes it does that, just like couch, buffalo and kikuyu. However it isn't damaged as easily as other varieties and it is said that it handles wear and tear better than any other turf. (info from the US and trials here in WA) It will recover slower from serious damage than the others though. If you want a fast recovering turf, Empress Zoysia is the candidate. Looks more like couch. It is much faster growing but that means more maintenance and a higher impact on your budget and resources. It will be the case no matter what you choose. Kike would be the toughest but can also cause skin irritations in dogs. Couch is a rampent agressive grower so will more than likely find it's way into places you didn't think possible. Soft leaf buffalos shouldn't cause much irritation at all but can be easily damaged. Either way what ever you choose won't look magic having dogs and with that in mind, choose the Zoysia if you can get it. Failing that Sir Walter or Palmetto. Re: Landscaping advice Required... 18Oct 22, 2009 8:50 pm Fu, Can you get the Empire Zoysia as seed? My 3/4 acre block as some bare dirt near the house and some ?grass around the rest (used to be a cow paddock). I was hoping to over sow on the existing grass. Any sugguestions? Paul Re: Landscaping advice Required... 19Oct 22, 2009 11:59 pm No, and you can't get the fancy buffalos as seed either. Plant runners or plant squares of the rolls cut up and wait for it all to grow through. Zoysia grows so slow, so you'd be there for a month of sundays before it all joins but once done, would look a treat. I'm sure grasshopper will come up with some excellent ideas for you Re: Landscaping advice Required... 20Oct 30, 2009 11:59 pm For bigger areas.. what about this stuff? http://www.hydrospraygrass.com.au/ discovered that today.. thought it was a bit interesting ! Also called that turf2go place today... 8m2 for zoysia wooo and very friendly customer service too i might add! Minimum overhang into gutter must be 50mm, turn down tool should not split the sheet. it seems wrong tool for the profile was used, the flashing cannot slope back.
