Browse Forums Landscape & Garden Design 1 Aug 17, 2009 4:28 pm Hi all. Is it essential for me to line the inside of a timber retaining wall I have just built with geo fabric? I will be running slotted ag for drainage and will back fill with 20mm screenings. If the main purpose for the fabric is to keep the pipe clear of dirt is it a suitable substitute to use agi covered in a sock (don't know if that's the correct term)? What happens if I don't use the fabric? I have read plenty oF sites that say I should use it, but just as many that don't mention it at all. Any advice appreciated. Re: Geofabric behind retaining wall- is it essential? 2Aug 17, 2009 7:27 pm Yeah you would be better off with a socked ag-pipe. The geotec fabric is for keeping dirt/silt from contaminating into an area of gravel for example or from entering into a storm water catchment. The socked ag-pipe is essentially just that Re: Geofabric behind retaining wall- is it essential? 5Aug 18, 2009 8:38 am danc12 Went to Bunnings on the weekend and i saw big rolls of socked agi for $69. It was on sale, I would ring around. Dan C Was this in Melbourne? Do Bunnings have related sales Aus wide? Re: Geofabric behind retaining wall- is it essential? 6Aug 18, 2009 12:53 pm The Geotech will also help to prevent dirt and fines coming through the gaps between you retaining wall wailings. This may not worry you. I painted my retaining walls and the dirt washing out would have spoilt the look. Re: Geofabric behind retaining wall- is it essential? 7Aug 19, 2009 8:58 am Me too. I just used the garden bed weed matting in the rolls about $6 for abour 10 meters!! Works perfectly. Also, as you said, agri pipe at the base (don't bother with the sock) and blue metal or other small stones under and on top of pipe. Re: Geofabric behind retaining wall- is it essential? 8Aug 18, 2010 5:17 pm With regards to the sock in the agri pipes, is it worth paying extra for the sock? I was thinking of using the geofabric to wrap the agri pipe and screening. But if i dont have to do that, and as a substitue, just get agri pipe with sock, then it would save me alot of money. Thanks Idiots are fun, that's why there is one in every village! - Dr. House - Re: Geofabric behind retaining wall- is it essential? 11Aug 20, 2010 9:38 am I used the geotextile fabric for the back of my sleeper retaining wall. As previously mentioned, this is used to prevent silt coming through the gaps in the wall and staining the front of the wall. I ran this down the inside of the wall and wrapped it around the agg and ag pipe at the base. Depends on how thorough a job you want to do ...... Re: Geofabric behind retaining wall- is it essential? 12Aug 20, 2010 9:40 am Well i will be having a brick retaining wall. I read from other forums that I might need to paint the back of the wall with gripset to waterproof it, as well as get geofabric for the agri pipe and screening. I just want to know whether I really need the geofabric? thanks. I also used a socked ag pipe as well. A bit of overkill? yes probably but I wanted to ensure that the the drainage gravel is kept as clean as possible. I ran my Geo Fabric along the back edge of my blocks and then ran in my ag pipe on top of the fabric to form an evelope for the gravel. To maximuse the width of the fabric I stood a 900mm x 1200mm peice of particle board about 250mm behind the wall in an upright position. The Geo sat perfectly up the particle board and then it was just a process of Gravel in front and fill behind the board. When I had filled a section I would pull the board out and move it along a length and start the process again. I didn't get a perfectly straight line of gavel vs fill but it was good enough for me. Thank you for your thoughts 0 8070 Thanks for the insights, that makes perfect sense, and yeah, I will be leaning on the experience of the excavator operator entirely. 6 16157 |
