Browse Forums Landscape & Garden Design 1 Aug 16, 2009 10:22 pm I have a very small backyard (about 4x4m) and I am getting privet removed along my back fence as it has grown out of control and is a weed. I want to plant something that grows to about 3-5 metres max. and is reasonably quick growing. It doesn't have to be a native, just something with maybe a nice flower. cheers, camelia Re: trees and shrubs 2Aug 16, 2009 10:30 pm Most importantly, where are you? ... and no I am not waiting for you to say, "at my computer" Re: trees and shrubs 4Aug 17, 2009 11:48 am What is the aspect? ie west or north etc Perhaps evergreen magnolia or blueberry ash Re: trees and shrubs 5Aug 17, 2009 8:27 pm I think it's west although it doesn't get that much sun due to surrounding houses and fenceline. I do like the blueberry ash although it's not all that bushy. I did'nt know there were evergreen varieties of magnolia. Do you know the species? thanks, camelia Re: trees and shrubs 7Aug 18, 2009 6:57 pm Will Kay Parris do OK on the south side of my place in Melbourne? I am considering using them to screen the back fence. There is only 2.5m between the back of the house and the fence so the area doesn't get a great deal of sun. The soil has quite a bit of clay in it. Re: trees and shrubs 8Aug 18, 2009 7:29 pm Fu will better answer this but I imagine they would like at least some decent morning sun. The soil would to be improved for better drainage if the clay is heavy A survey must’ve completed by a certified surveyor.
