I don't water them very often, though we have been getting a bit of rain lately. They don't get afternoon sun. I gave them a feed of seasol and powerfeed yesterday - any other advice would be appreciated. http://i163.photobucket.com/albums/t315/DaisySparkle/Palms.jpg Re: What is wrong with my palms please? Pic included. 8Aug 05, 2009 11:55 pm I just don't know Golden canes will live happily in Victoria... They don't take too kindly to cold. We shall see what Fu thinks... Regards, Ari Ari & Scott Darwin, NT Re: What is wrong with my palms please? Pic included. 9Aug 06, 2009 12:15 am Well why I ask is because they look very much like those from WA. One nursery in particular. The growth habit, size and I am estimating they were planted between, 1 month ago to maybe around March. Most likely to have been bought in a mauve pot, red pot or maroon pot. This nursery exports these in massive quantities to the Eastern States to supply retail nurseries. They are shade grown and I am pretty sure it is done in the north, then brought to Perth and then exported East. They don't know what cold is and have never really been in the sun. The golden cane can grow in the sun but will take years to get used to it if it hasn't been grown in sun this far south. Like watching an Irishman get a tan. Re: What is wrong with my palms please? Pic included. 10Aug 06, 2009 7:51 am I bought them from Bunnings, and they have been in the ground around 5-6 months. They haven't grown much at all since going in the ground. Re: What is wrong with my palms please? Pic included. 12Aug 06, 2009 6:31 pm Then I can assure you they were from WA Well they are grown in tropical locations, brought to Perth and then exported to the eastern states. However your problem is the cold and the sun if they get any in summer. Like I said, they'd be like an Irishman getting a tan. It is going to take years (5 maybe) for those puppies to get growing for you there. Even here they struggle. Not very tropical. Once established though they will do very well or at least well enough. I bet I was right with the pot colours too Would have been a 5ltr pot. Or maybe a black 12ltr pot. If they were to grow those any other way, you'd be paying a staggering amount more. Re: What is wrong with my palms please? Pic included. 13Aug 06, 2009 9:20 pm I will pick your brains here Fu. You say that these palms are Golden Cane Palms (Dypsis lutescens) but they look identical in that juvenile state to what we call Cascade Palms (Chamaedorea cataractarum) - which are apparently quite hardy - but mine have died back too! I'm now wondering if they have been wrongly marketed? Geoff - Decophile. Re: What is wrong with my palms please? Pic included. 14Aug 06, 2009 10:24 pm Slightly different. Not as common as the parlour palms and bamboo palms of the Chamaedoreas. I wouldn't suggest any of the Chamaedorea's are all that tough for most of Australia. They are all best suited to being indoor plants and when used as indoor plants they are pretty tough. If you are in the North they should be fine anywhere pretty much. Best with more shade though even there. In the wild they are an understory palm. all shaded and protected under the forest canopy. So yeah they are tough where they are from and they are tough when used indoors compared to some other indoor plants. That goes for all the Chams. .................................................................................................................................. You guys need to understand that growing sun hardened palms is slow and expensive stuff for the growers. Yeah in the north, they grow like weeds and nearly all are grown in sun. However northern sun and southern sun are very different. When they are brought south, the foliage is not tough enough to handle the cold. They are craving warm easy growing temps and little stress. A mate of mine grows some excellent palms here in Northern Perth. In the sun and very tough. However his prices are 3 times that of nurseries that sell shade grown soft palms. premire plams in Perths South also do excellent palms that are mostly sun grown. I know of loads of nurseries that sell shade grown palms and when asked if they are sun hardened, they say yeah they are! The mate I mentioned in the other thread with the fake turf, well he went and bought some huge Kentias. He was told they were sun hardened. They were ones another mate of mine grew in shade and sold to where fake turf mate bought them. Same pots, same growth, same colour at time of purchase and when i checked it out, yep the nursery bought them from him too They burnt and looked like rubbish. The cold got to them and so did the sun and wind. I might post a pic of my Kentias I got. I know they will be average for years though Look crap just now, but they will get better in time One Kentia has burnt shredded fronds except one new one By growing in shade, wholesale growers get faster growth with less overheads. This creates a good stock turn for them and the client wonders why the palm isn't so flash in the garden. The poor thing, it's having a hard time outside the palm "resort" In Vicco most of your palms would be coming from WA, NT or FNQ. No quarantine hassles. For West Aussies our importing of plants is subject to some of the toughest quarantine laws in the world. So they are grown more or less in the north of the state or quarantined at great cost before going to other wholesalers and then onto retailers. If anyone has ever noticed the sun burning in summer then going north and finding the sun is not as harsh, well your palms do too. It is going to take years to get them hardened up. It maybe up to 5 years. Most retail nurseries in Melbourne will mostly stock palms in the warmer months when they sell the stock quick and with low chuck outs. Check out your local garden centre now though and unless the palms showed up the day before, I'll bet my left nut they look pretty average. Most won't have any in stock unless in shade houses. However by no means does this mean they are going to die. Palms in Melbourne are very doable. Have patience and feed the soil not with fertilisers but organic material. Protect from cold with plastic enclosures, use lots of seasol. Understand your palms and you will get enlightenment May the frond be with you Re: What is wrong with my palms please? Pic included. 15Aug 07, 2009 8:17 am Up north, the sun is harsh, but luckily we have the humidity up here. There is nothing worse than the harsh and dry condition for tropical palms. Sometimes we have that 40deg and dry day in the dry season (not very often, thank goodness) - that is when I flood my garden... trying to create some humidity. Once you have canopy (which I don't have very much), it won't be so bad. A few friends are growing some palms down there quite successfully. If you want, I can get some list together for you. Pic included. 16Aug 07, 2009 8:24 am Thanks SO MUCH for all your information Fu and Ariscott, that is what I love about the forum. Ask and ye shall recieve! So I have 3 choices: 1. Take them back to Bunnings and figure out something else to put in their spot (and I thought they would have looked so good darn it!). 2. Seasol and hope they get better over time. 3. Pot them up and bring them inside? If I did this can I cut off all the brown bits, and will the yellow colour go green again, or am I best to give it all a big haircut and wait for lovely new green growth... Ariscott - I'd love a list of what will work down my way please. I have a sheltered area that only gets morning sun that I was hoping to "palmify" Re: What is wrong with my palms please? Pic included. 17Aug 07, 2009 11:17 am This is the list I got from my friend.. He lives at Seaford, VIC. Butia Capitata (bullet proof) Washingtonia Archontophoenix (out of the wind)..I think Alex does better than Bangalow here actually ! Livistona Australis & Decora. Kentia Dypsis baronii Majestic (watered well) Trachycarpus Chamaedoreas (cataractum, seifrezei, radicalis) Ravenea glauca Some of them are rather hard to find. It will all depends on the size and the look that you want to achieve. Let me know how you go. Regards, Ari Ari & Scott Darwin, NT Re: What is wrong with my palms please? Ahh yes in a way but down south we have very little ozone layer in comparison to you so UV is far stronger for much longer. (Yes right now you have some extreme UV levels ) Re: What is wrong with my palms please? Pic included. 20Aug 07, 2009 3:47 pm I've seen some nice triangle palms on the chilli WA south coast (Dypsis decaryi) and dwarf date palms (Phoenix roebelenii)-but they have nasty thorns. Some great choices Ari Daisy I'd take them back. Get something easier hey there! 😊 so, it’s kinda common for standard drawer depths to be around 500mm since most cabinets use this size to fit the usual runners… 3 20909 Sorry!
