Browse Forums Landscape & Garden Design 1 Aug 14, 2009 5:24 pm We are planning to lay turf in our backyard in the near future. When we moved in late last year the ground was quite muddy and we had crushed rock spread over the entire yard to prevent a mud bath. So... when we lay the turf, is it enough to bring in soil to put over the top of the crushed rock? OR does the rock need to be removed beforehand? Re: Preparation for lawn in backyard 3Aug 14, 2009 9:42 pm Thanks for the link. I have a had a good look through the posts and the summary re: laying turf. I guess my main concern (couldn't find the answer) is: Do I need to remove the crushed rock or can I just cover it with soil? Re: Preparation for lawn in backyard 4Aug 15, 2009 9:55 am I'm no expert, but as long as your doing a good layer of soil over the top I would leave it 'A bottle of wine contains more philosophy than all the books in the world.' They will need to go much deeper than an inch or two. Also a rich layer of soil on the surface keeps moisture there at the surface that increases evaporation in summer. It means you may use much more water than you really need because the lawns roots are mostly in that rich layer of soil. Also when the lawn dries out the fine hair/feeder roots dry out too and do not recover for as long as 4 weeks (as seen from trials). This means while people pump the lawn full of water, it is not absorbed into the lawns system very well, in fact a large portion of that water will just go to waste. It is those roots that absorb water and nutrients. Re: Preparation for lawn in backyard 6Aug 16, 2009 9:15 am oooh ok! oops!
