Browse Forums Landscape & Garden Design 1 Aug 12, 2009 7:20 pm Hi there, We had Kikuyu instant turf delivered today. I understand that this is a warm weather grass and it goes dormant in winter, but the colour just looks off. Here's a pic: Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ You can see the established grass on our nature strip to compare the colour. We've laid instant turf before at our last house and it was very very green and lush (but it was tall fescue). Does this grass look OK? I realise it's very muddy and dirty but I'm worried about the health of it. Re: Kikuyu Grass: we laid ours today and it looks dead 2Aug 12, 2009 7:31 pm Hey, What sort of grass is on the nature strip? I'll guess not kikuyu? It looks fine, you won't really tell until the temperature warms up. Don't bother fertilising it at the mo, you'll just encourage weeds and other unwanted grass species. When temps warm up it should be ok (will need some watering to establish) and then you'll be trying to work out how to slow it down!! Tall fescue is a cool season grass so if you had it laid spring or autumn it would have taken off with no probs. Cheers What state you in? Southern somewhere I presume? Re: Kikuyu Grass: we laid ours today and it looks dead 3Aug 12, 2009 7:45 pm We are in Melbourne. I have no idea what the grass on the nature strip/park reserve is, but it was planted by the council using that spray on green seed stuff. We had tall fescue last time but it didn't handle our cat wee very well and we had Kikuyu recommended to us for its hardiness. Re: Kikuyu Grass: we laid ours today and it looks dead 4Aug 12, 2009 9:05 pm Hmm, no expert but I wouldn't worry about kikuyu, just make sure it's kept damp and give it time to come good. We laid kike about 2 months ago and it's only just starting to show much growth, although we got lucky because we got it laid then had two weeks of rain broken with a day here and there of full sun so it got a good start. Re: Kikuyu Grass: we laid ours today and it looks dead 5Aug 12, 2009 11:37 pm We had Kike laid about 3-4 weeks ago and it looked great for the first few days, went a bit funny and now with the rain looks great again, we are in Melb too. Our landscaper told me not to worry too much about it and not to touch it with anything until at least Sept/Oct. He also said that you can check to see if it's "taken" by lifting up one corner. I've watered ours twice, the day it was installed and again two days later and I haven't touched it since, it looks fine. Yours might just need some time to settle Happy at Home Re: Kikuyu Grass: we laid ours today and it looks dead 6Aug 12, 2009 11:58 pm It's fine Spray on turf is made up of cool season turf varieties which should be banned in Australia. They are lush and green in winter and use large volumes of water in summer to saty the same anyway, if your turf grower has had frost occurring then the Kike will be particularly brown. Next year it won't be like that once established. It won't look flash but it will be better What ever you do, don't fertilise it! Not cool on new turf and you know what? I reckon it is not nessesary on any turf when better feeding with organic material and products are used instead Right now, Get some 1. Olsens Green Bio 2. Powerfeed 3. Seasol 4. Molasses (search the forum for how to use) Use the seasol every week for the next few weeks at least. I'd say 6 weeks is better. Make sure it doesn't dry out. But don't keep it wet either She'll be right Thank you. Do I use timber floorboards for stairs or do people use timber treads? Or is both the same? 6 7310 2 833 I had new concrete laid, extended the alfresco and had the sidewalks concreted too. I noticed the concreter didn't put the expansion foam anywhere, there are expansion… 0 8132 |
