Re: TURF LAYING SUMMARY and what has become many things turf 375Sep 30, 2010 8:53 am Hi Timbo, I know nothing about lawns... but I heard somewhere that if you put too much good top soil over the lawn, the roots of the lawn grows shallow and every year the turf gets worst. This prob needs FU for review though as I said, I know nothing about lawns. Re: TURF LAYING SUMMARY and what has become many things turf 376Sep 30, 2010 7:59 pm no_idea, mate you are spot on with that one. This business of layering a rich soil onto a poor soil is not a good practice. It is an easy practice but not a good one You do end up with shallow roots. This leads to greater dependency on fertilisers (which are not getting cheaper) wetting agents, which leads on to greater disease problems and a far greater water use. The short of it is the lawn will be a right pain the ar se. You will wish you never had it. Do it right first time and it is cheaper and easy, and a sustainable option to produce oxygen, no chemicals and cool the home. Re: TURF LAYING SUMMARY and what has become many things turf 377Oct 02, 2010 4:13 am Hi Fu I am reading through this thread for a while and want to get your advise on few things. Soil i got in my backyard is not really good it got clay in it and it used to be pretty hard. Last weekend i hired a rotary hoe and dig the whole area(100Sq meters), while i had the machine i also put 100KG of gypsum and mixed it well. Now the whole area is pretty soft and the soil doesnt seems to be too bad. Since then i am trying to clean the soil by picking up rocks and concrete etc. Now i am almost finished with it, i was thinking to buy 6-7cubic meters of sandy loam soil(Guy from local nursery suggested) Is that good to use for a lawn? I want to use seeds for lawn, i have read through your previous posts and going to use Munns lawn seeds but bit confused which type i should go for? I was thinking between Emerald Kikuyu and Pooch couch. Could you please suggest which one would be a better choice? Also if i am missing anything please let me know? Re: TURF LAYING SUMMARY and what has become many things turf 378Oct 02, 2010 12:00 pm Well old skool would say yes but I say no. Why? Because the goodies in organic composts will serve to break up clays making them become far more friable in the long term. They also release you from processed fertiliser dependency. The knowledge we are learning here in the west suggests using sands with a little more care. The loamy bit is great but the sands, although help improve drainage also contribute to nutrient leaching. and don't hold the water so well. Most layer the soil and these factors become very evident. Mixing them with what you have will be a good idea. It will still have a benefit but compared with high grade certified organic composts,well... They would leave the sandy loam for dead. There are many who would disagree but being a child of the old ways and exploring alternatives, I have never before go the results I do with old methods! Every few years, top dress with certified organic composts. Do that when the spring nights warm up The same guy would say to topdress with sandy loam. Do that every year and your lawn will get problems, need more fertiliser and get higher. Molasses, seamungus, seasol, powerfeed. Use those throughout the year. Blood and bone with good winter rains. Mix it up a bit As for lawn seed, Emerald Kike. They are both going to be aggressive in the garden but are far better choices than the other stuff being sold in boxes. Couch will do your head in once in the garden beds. I find Kike will also but be easier to remove. Not easy, but easier They are both hard wearing choices. Re: TURF LAYING SUMMARY and what has become many things turf 379Oct 02, 2010 12:20 pm As I have previously mention, I have layed down lawn mix because I was not aware of the difference between that and certified organic soil. Now this is done, I am about to lay down Zeolite (500g per metre sq) and rotary hoe it in. Firstly, do I need to add Spongolite as well or can I just get away with Zeolite. Secondly, because I have used only lawn mix, should I mix in some mushroom compost or cow manure?
