Oh, and a cape! A superhero needs a cape! (just not made from weedmat, cause it doesn't work and you won't fly!!) You will mulch the world... one bin of fresh, green tree-lopper mulch at a time! Re: Palmetto vs Sir Walter Turf 23Aug 19, 2009 1:19 pm Hi Fu I just spoke with a supplier for Empire and was told it isn't available for another few weeks as it 'is looking like straw'. Kind of alarming and certainly not what I'd want this time next year in my back yard. Furthermore I am not convinced of its suitability in Melbourne. The Empire material seems to always steer clear of mention of Victoria. Possibly now leaning towards Sir Walter, but would love to know your thoughts. Re: Palmetto vs Sir Walter Turf 24Aug 20, 2009 2:32 pm I too wanted EZ but I cant wait. I am opting for Sapphire Soft Leaf Buffalo (St Augustine). Good in all weather, fine leaf, vert low water requirement. $10.00 per sqm. $77.00 delivery at HGTURF Re: Palmetto vs Sir Walter Turf 26Aug 20, 2009 10:41 pm annie.s Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No! Well there is a reason and it isn't due to your weather, well it is and it isn't. This is one very slow growing turf. If you were running a business growing turf and you had one ripper variety that took ages to grow, would you be plugging it? No, you'd be selling up the varieties you can get a better turn over on and better money. From the perspective of the homeowner, they are some serious characteristics you want. Once established this stuff isn't effected by cold anymore than sir walter or palmetto which generally look like crap now anyway. http://www.empireturf.com.au/ watch the clip at the bottom of the page. I think most of you will recognise Nev from The Garden Gurus and formerly from Gardening Australia. I have learnt a heap from this great man and been a part of his old radio programme here in WA many years ago. He does know his stuff. Now my mate Simmo in Wangaratta also swears by Empire Zoysia. Wang is a fair bit colder than Melbourne and he has had it grow there just fine. again, PM me for his contact. In Victoria it grows slower than anywhere and that means a turf farm can't make good coin from it there. Simmo has an exceptional knowledge on turf. He is also very aware of the practices of some turf growers and the need for the turf industry to change fast in line with growing more environmentally responsible turf varieties like Empire Zoysia. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t8vPBDtvd9U Re: Palmetto vs Sir Walter Turf 28Aug 21, 2009 12:15 am Fu Manchu annie.s Is it a bird? I put palmetto down last year and it is great. Agree with the Fu on the empire, but if you cannot get it, I found the Palmetto is great, and at good prices too. Adrian B Re: Palmetto vs Sir Walter Turf 31Aug 21, 2009 10:30 am Fu, for a moment, I thought it was really you!! BTW, its only $45, can I get one from Bunnings?? It is too late for me now that I have got sir walter laid. Anyhow, for my curiosity and for the benefit of the others, is it still appropriate to lay empire zoysia in winter? From what I gather so far, winter + the slow growing characteristic makes it very difficult to establish the roots. Does it mean that it will be easy to die and we should avoid laying in winter? Or, if the soil is well-prepared (as outlined in the other thread), it will be ok?? You don't know how Brazilian it is! If you were able to see all of Adrian, you'd understand Re: Palmetto vs Sir Walter Turf 34Jul 04, 2012 7:22 pm Old thread and I wonder if Fu has changed his mind. All I read about Zoysia is that it the highest evaporation rate - needs more water. While on the topic, if my side of a house gets less than 4 hours of direct sunlight, is there a grass specie that will handle it well? And don't say Zoysia =) Re: Palmetto vs Sir Walter Turf 35Jul 04, 2012 8:49 pm There is so much BS spread about different turf brands. Who ever is writing about "Turf Evaporation rates" doesnt have a clue what they are on about. Evaporation is the loss of water from soil due to the climatic conditions, it has nothing to do with the plant. Evapotranspiration is another thing altogether but i am no going to go into that. EZ grows as well as the rest of them. It has its problems just like the others too. For your 4 hours of light go with the turf grass with the widest leaf blade to maximise the limited light avaliable for photosynthisis. One of the reasons couch is crap in the shade. Re: Palmetto vs Sir Walter Turf 36Jul 17, 2012 8:56 pm I am in perth and have had EZ for the last 4.5 yrs....best thing I ever did...still looks good in winter, no disease, very dense turf so no weeds can get through, is a fabulous vibrant green in summer...ONLY needs mowing every 2-3 weeks...and BEST of all it does not have fast growing runners that encroach into garden beds... Have had Winter Green, Windsor Green, Santa Anna and Greenlees Park in the past and absolutely NONE are a patch on EZ...All of the above went off in the winter, allowing weeds to come through, grew too fast in summer & needed mowing at least once a week... Would have again in a heartbeat... If Sir Walter couldnt grow there nothing could, but yes empire is also a nice lawn I hope you are happy with it. Re: Palmetto vs Sir Walter Turf 38Jul 28, 2012 11:29 am And also to oneness all the grasses you have had previously are couches which are quick growing high mantienence lawns. Sir Walter is even better for shade and traffic then empire and if your after low maintainence palmetto is slow growing yet still frost and shade tolerant more so then the empire lawn. However Empire is still a beautiful lawn but dosnt perform as well as buffalos Re: Palmetto vs Sir Walter Turf 39Jul 28, 2012 11:57 am Hi Muscat 69, yes I do realise all of the other grasses are fast growing couches in WA which is the only grass other than buffalo or kikuyu that you can have, as a fine leaf breed would not cope with the heat... I have no idea about EZ growing in the shade as mine is in full sun all day..Next house no lawn at all, except a tiny patch of artificial Personally, I do not like the look of Buffalo as the blades are too broad and if your mower is not dead sharp it can look tatty as it tears the leaf...I have family members who have both Sir Walter and Palmetto and they find it thatches up far too quickly which makes it extremely difficult in the Perth heat to get the 2 day a week watering down to where it's actually needed in the root zone...Also the runners on the surface are not a good look either...Also it is not comfortable to sit on and has allergenic aspects too. Each to their own I guess...
