Browse Forums Landscape & Garden Design 1 Aug 09, 2009 6:41 pm Hey everyone, was hoping someone who knows anything about gardens could give me some suggestions - today we planted a row of ornamental flowering cherries along our back fence, firstly I was wondering what if anything we have to do to look after them (we are gardenly challenged ) and I want to know what I can plant underneath and between them? They look a little boring without leaves and flowers so want to pretty up the area. She's backkkkk... Re: Suggestions on what to plant please? 2Aug 09, 2009 7:23 pm first think of this ( click the link on the right says, growing between fruit trees) http://www.greatgardens.info/video/grea ... videos.php Now you have that in mind, choose something that won't require to much digging in the future. Good soil is the very first place to start. With out that you will for ever be buying fertilisers, insecticides, fungicides and the garden will never really flourish. Bags of certified organic soil from your local garden centre is a must or better still is having it delivered in bulk There is a big difference between certified organic and just organic I would suggest some thing ever green and maybe a something you can trim into a formal hedge. Royenas would look good because they colour up well in the winter and early spring. African box (myrsine africana) can be clipped into a formal hedge easy to grow and tough. I don't suggest grasses or strappy leafed plants because in a few years, you'll have the garden chocked with them and have to dig them up and split them, pretty hard work and may harm the cherries roots. They would look good as contrast planting though at first. Be careful choosing natives because they maybe sensitive to the requirements of the cherries Some will be fine though 0 4717 Hi, Looking to add an ensuite to one of the bedrooms and make it a Master BR.
