They sell fake grass at Bunnings (next to the weedmat). From memory it was about $70 per metre (1m x 1.9m). The price varies depending upon the height and density. Have a look to give yourself an idea of what is available. As far as what is involved in installation, there is a bit to it: 1. Dig out whatever is there and setup the edging 2. Prepare the base, level out and provide a bed of crushed rock or similar 3. Lay the grass 4. Fill with sand Not sure how it is for dogs. If your dog is a digger, may not be so great.... Re: Fake Turf How much? is it good? 3Aug 05, 2009 7:15 pm Just be aware that some of them can get quite hot during summer. Re: Fake Turf How much? is it good? 4Aug 05, 2009 7:16 pm Excuse my ignorance , but how would your dog... umm... go potty? so to speak on fake grass. Sounds really messy to me. Not to mention wouldn't the plastic get hot out in the sun?, Could be something to think about if you have little ones. I have been googling a bit lately as we would like an easy garden to look after & I have seen some really nice rock/pebble gardens that don't look all that hard to take care of. There are threads discussing this in the Landscaping & Garden section of the forums. And you will probably get more replies there too. My tac-home-ter: Been in 8 months! They were using more water on it than real turf. When it was dry the bowls don't bowl well. With the moisture they got stinky bacteria growing. They then had to apply chemicals to stop that. I also have a mate who just got fake turf. He took on board my dislike of it and went ahead anyway. He already wishes he didn't lay it. The volume of water used to produce fake turf during manufacture is massive. The chemicals used to produce fake turf are ludicrous. The more people buy it, the more they have to make and the more pollutants produced there are to ironically save the environment. These generate a heap of heat. Our cities already absorb masses of heat and I don't encourage anything that may make that worse still. In fact many pavers don't get as hot. There is a house in a nearby suburb that had it laid in the front. Some idiot had backed up to it, and done a burnout on it. Grass grows back. Around the corner from that is an example of the same thing again. Paving can cost almost the same and with a light colour it won't be like walking across hot sand at the beach in summer. You could spend the same money on a nice tree for cooling shade and some better garden design to suit. This further reduces the environmental impact of urban areas. Cools the home and reduces the need for AC. It shines in the sun. What grass shines? I have seen all sorts in my game and I have never seen one that doesn't shine. If you dog dumps on it and whizzes on it it can start stinking up and you need to use some stuff on it to stop that. Not always though. -but having poo poo'd synthetic turf, some people just like it. I do have to admit I recently saw someone use it well in a design. A very thin strip between paving and a limestone wall. looked pretty good like that. So I guess would also look sort of OK with it between slabs on a pathway instead of mondo grass or similar. Re: Fake Turf How much? is it good? 9Aug 06, 2009 9:51 am Hi Sparky, My partner lays synthetic grass and from what I know there are quite a few different types out now depending on what you want the grass for. They come in all different shades and lengths, some do get quite hot and others are okay you would just need to check them out properly. In regards to the dog's I have been told that you just have to give the grass a quick hose down and that dogs are fine with it. I believe as long as you don't leave wee and poo ****** around on the grass for weeks it will be fine. I will be getting my garden done in synthetic once we move in. Hope this helps. Re: Fake Turf How much? is it good? 11Aug 07, 2009 4:46 pm Have a read of these articles and tell me you still want artifical turf . http://www.cityfieldsfoundation.org/doc ... 042908.pdf This one is more related to the use of recycled rubber being used along with the turf but if you have kids it is interesting none the less. It is something used in many playgrounds too. http://www.ehhi.org/reports/turf/turf_report07.pdf These studies are not isolated to one US gov. Dept. They have been conducted by governments all over the world. Re: Fake Turf How much? is it good? 12Aug 07, 2009 10:49 pm Hi sparkycarla We are strongly considering fake grass - we will have trouble growing grass in a particular area of our back yard due to rock. Also we cannot get a lawnmower up to the area without dragging it ups about a dozen stairs. Last week I saw a brand new product and it was truly amazing - you really had to take a good look at it. It isn't "stringy" like most versions I have seen. It was $49 p/m for the less quality, and $53 for the tougher version - not including laying costs. I will get the name of it tomorrow and repost for you. JL Re: Fake Turf How much? is it good? 13Aug 16, 2009 11:01 pm We saw a funny nature strip they other day which had been covered in synthetic turf. It was in a display village at an estate we were working at and someone had done a burnout on one of the areas, which left a big burnt plastic/rubber mark in the turf. They will have to cough up for a replacement piece now, where as real grass would grow back (if a self repairing variety such as buffalo/couch etc). It has its place, but needs careful consideration before it is used just for the sake of not mowing or watering.
