Re: Which season / month is the best month for planting? 9Jul 25, 2009 11:03 am Autumn is best for most plants. The soil is still warm, there is not much growth above the ground with reduced sunlight as days are getting shorter and cooler so the plant is putting all its efforts into developing a strong root system and hopefully in some regions of Australia autumn rains help with watering. However if we want to plant tropical plants in cooler regions of Australia, it is said that late autumn is better as the tropical plants need warm soil to get established. Hope this helps cheers Maggie Re: Which season / month is the best month for planting? 11Jul 26, 2009 11:44 pm What about landscaping that is required to be done within a certain time from handover? My handover will be due about the height of summer. Should I just tell the council it will all be dead anyway if I plant around Feb, and then plant when it gets a little bit cooler? My handover will be due about the height of summer. Should I just tell the council it will all be dead anyway if I plant around Feb, and then plant when it gets a little bit cooler? Definitely! I would send them a letter, maybe with your garden plans and explain when it's best to plant them and ask them if that's OK, it's what I would do for sure. I've heard that in my estate people will often apply for a 6 month exclusion for something while they wait for something to be done or till they can afford it etc 'A bottle of wine contains more philosophy than all the books in the world.' I've heard that in my estate people will often apply for a 6 month exclusion for something while they wait for something to be done or till they can afford it etc Thanks Lisanne, it would be nice to think they would give you a bit of leeway during the massively hot and dry summers! I would like to have my garden plan sorted by the time handover comes round as I'm doing two landscaping courses in the next few months, one with a very well respected landscape designer here in Perth I can always tell the council that because they stuffed me around so much with my building licence (see my thread!) then I ought to be able to stuff them round a bit with the landscaping! Though maybe this comes under the developers, and I don't know how long they will let me have as I'll be using an included $5000 landscaping package. I've just looked at the landscaping package form, and they said the application must be sent to the landscaping contracters at least 8 weeks prior to house completion, and that landscaping will commence just after the house is occupied. Will follow it up! My tac-home-ter: Been in 8 months! I remember when I was a kid, my Dad had a poster from Yates (I think) that told you what to plant in each month of the year for your vegie garden. I wish I could get something similar and then for say you have 4 garden bed's the rotation and stuff etc too! I keep hearing them say on Gardening Australia to rotate each season but I have no idea which plants are related to each other etc and shouldn't be re-planted in the same bed the following year. I spose I will get to understand it all in time and from my own experience eventually In the past I've just gone by what is in the nursery in seedlings, but that isn't always ideal 'A bottle of wine contains more philosophy than all the books in the world.'
