Browse Forums Landscape & Garden Design 1 Jul 11, 2009 11:44 pm We are building and nearly to lock up. I understand that there is supposed to be a path around the house for ease of access and to protect the foundations from excessive water. What is the supposed width of the path supposed to be, wheel barrow width? Also if the path is to help water run away from the foundations, why do so many people have garden beds or gravel paths etc around the house perimeter? Thanks Re: Qs re path around house 2Jul 11, 2009 11:57 pm Garden beds around a house are not a good idea, unless adequate waterproofing has been taken care of soil against a wall is bad Where you are coming from is where you are going to... Re: Qs re path around house 3Jul 12, 2009 12:05 am Nothing worse than paths that don't fit trade size wheel barrows down and gate ways that also don't fit a trade barrow through. That's about 800mm with just a little room to spare. As Onc mentions there is the moisture thing. Having them up against the house you also run the risk of having white ants gaining easy access into you property. I have one garden bed against the house but I am very diligent in keeping the soil and mulch at slab level. We have termimesh but I still keep paving and soil at slab level. Re: Qs re path around house 7Jul 12, 2009 5:41 pm Helyn Our builder provided concrete perimeter paths around house, 1 m wide. House/land package, perimeter paths were included - not sure if 1m is standard width Hrmmm another thing to consider.... My head is about to implode with everything I need to think of!
