Browse Forums Landscape & Garden Design 1 Jul 05, 2009 8:36 pm Hi everyone We've just finished landscaping our front garden and now have to attempt the sides and back. For the sides we want to put down stones. What sort of size stones should we go for small or large? Do we have to put anything underneath them? How deep do we need to have them i.e. 100 mm etc. For the back garden we are going to put down some organic soil and try to seed it. How deep should be have the organic soil?....and when is it a good time of year to plant seed in Melbourne? Any advice would be much appreciated. Fiona Re: Stones and Lawn Seed Advice needed 2Jul 06, 2009 4:36 pm Hi flew, hopefully I can help you out. We have pebbles around our pavers and larger stones in a garden at the front of the house. The stones don't have plastic or anything under them and there is really only one layer of them; the smaller stones cover the ground between the larger ones. We had organic soil spread all over our back yard and seeded it; the soil was never any deeper than 50mm and the grass grew well initially, died off over summer but has now grown back tremendously. We planted in November last year, you should wait until Spring now. Further details here: viewtopic.php?f=19&t=10262 Geoff - Decophile. Thanks, S & T Re: Stones and Lawn Seed Advice needed 5Jul 09, 2009 7:47 pm Hello Fiona, How are you? The seeds highly recommended is Munns, they are usually Tall fescue blend, apparently my neighbour throw theirs in 4 weeks ago and now very good, not sure re summer whether they will die ? If you intend to lay Turf, Conquest couch is ok now but Buffalo they told us to wait till September. Hello Eager, Can I please ask the Brunning seeds you used, you said it died in summer, now regrow, does it regrow by itself or you re sow? Good luck to you all, S & T Re: Stones and Lawn Seed Advice needed 6Jul 09, 2009 10:26 pm Yes in summer they will die off a bit. They are cool season grasses and many in the industry with a conscience towards the water resources would like to see this stuff banned. They have a huge water need. However I would say that if you do chose a seeded lawn, then a Munns one will be the best option For pebbles, it is a good idea to put some "weed mat" down. More for if you have sandy soils, the mat does sweet FA for stopping weeds (don't get me started ) but stops it working into the soil if it sandy. On clay just compact it if you can. Get the pebbles on like any mulch and do it to a depth of 75mm at least. The size you choose will depend on what you like the look of and what you can get at the right price (click the mulch link) http://www.greatgardens.info/video/grea ... videos.php Re: Stones and Lawn Seed Advice needed 7Jul 11, 2009 10:19 pm serenityhome Hello Eager, Can I please ask the Brunning seeds you used, you said it died in summer, now regrow, does it regrow by itself or you re sow? Good luck to you all, S & T Although we did put some seed down in some completely bare patches, the areas that reduced to stubble in the hot weather has grown back all by itself. Geoff - Decophile.
