Browse Forums Landscape & Garden Design 1 Jul 02, 2009 9:02 am I would like to plant a feature tree in a spot that has good drainage, will get hot afternoon summer sun and not a whole lot of winter sun, and it is about 2-3 metres from the house. I already have man. pears, chinese pistachios, fejoia's and olives. Suggestions greatly appreciated... Re: Tree suggestions please! 2Jul 02, 2009 11:44 am Have a busy day today but I will let you know more later. I hope Lacebark can offer some suggestions. 7000 people can surely come up with good ones. 2-3 metres though is pretty close Cottonwood Hibiscus (Hibiscus Tilleaceous rubra) would be pretty hassle free as far as roots go. The forest pansy as well would be really nice. There is another relative of the forest pansy that is a good choice too but will have to have a squiz in a book for that one Re: Tree suggestions please! 3Jul 02, 2009 5:35 pm Beautiful leaves... LOVE forest pansy in autumn, what colour are the leaves in non-autumn? Are they burgundy? Isn't it a bit big, 5 metres wide? Could be mistaken. Will have a look at Cottonwood Hibiscus too. Thanks Fu. Re: Tree suggestions please! 4Jul 03, 2009 12:23 am For any tree, 5m is classed as small. If you want smaller than 5m then really you want a shrub and prune the uderstory away to make it look like a tree. Nearly every forest pansy I have seen has been only 3-4m (4m at best) It might grow different over east but either way you can keep it shaped. Also, yes the leaves are burgundy all year Re: Tree suggestions please! 6Oct 12, 2009 2:17 am I know one of Australias leading Arboriculturists. He is the one who adamantly says that you can safely plant a tree close to a home provided it stays under 5m. The reason being tree roots will not penetrate compacted soil like that under house pads. The roots will go for softer soil surrounding the area which is something that was new to me as well. He taught me sopme basics about how roots grow on trees. Understanding roots is even more important than how the tree grows above the ground. They are still learning more and more about tree root systems. I'd be reluctant to test the theory at mine although I am giving it a nudge with a few. Hi , I'm currently going through this now within the Whitehorse council which has a similar set of restrictions. We're having to make compromises with our floor plan due… 3 30575 Hello. I just bought a few acres in Habana, Mackay, and my horses seem to love hanging around under this tree. I would like to name the paddock after this tree. Can… 0 9495 |
