We'd like to plant a few fruit trees. We had Orange, Lemon and Grapefruit at our last house. We couldn't give away the grapefruit quick enough. Oranges never made it into the house, kid used to devour them outside. Must have a lemon tree again. Happy at Home Re: Anyone planting fruit trees? :) 11May 25, 2009 10:44 am In spite of space constraints, I'll be putting in a Lisbon lemon and a Tahitian Lime ....we had the world's best lemon tree at our old house till some #@*%! set fire to the grass behind our place, taking out our back fence, shed and my 15-year-old lemon tree. - AND the lime tree, which I'd finally coaxed into producing fruit after about 6-7 years... We had a great almond tree too. The new owner cut it down. I know the Lisbon has nasty thorns, but I like its fruit better than the other varieties, and it seems to love Melbourne's climate. Anyone got any thoughts on space-saving varieties? Or is regular pruning the way to go? Re: Anyone planting fruit trees? :) 12May 25, 2009 12:57 pm Lemon and Lime tree's are a must! Plus I would love to maybe have an Avocado tree, but don't know much about growing them. Oh and I will have strawberries but they aren't a tree as such, they will be in the vegie patch or a hanging basket 'A bottle of wine contains more philosophy than all the books in the world.' Re: Anyone planting fruit trees? :) 15May 25, 2009 6:02 pm I moved through a lot of houses in years past in Sydney and Brisbane and was always struck by how many times the yard contained a lemon tree. Sometimes there was virtually nothing else - but always a lemon. Being the ignorant fellow I am I mentioned this to an older and wiser person who went into a very vigorous rant about the many and varied uses of lemons. My experience had, until then, been confined to add some bite to cocktails Come summer time where I live there's a big trade in fruit. We swap buckets of plums and apricots for all sorts of other fruits and vegetables. And of course we have truly pure jam and preserves all year. It all sounds terribly homely and domestic, but the quality and taste of home-grown fruit really is superior. It can stay on the tree longer, so gets sweeter & juicier, and is never last year's cold storage. It's wonderful to be able to wander about the yard snacking It's just a shame that one of my kids absolutely refuses to eat *any* fruit at all ! Do the hard jobs first.
