Browse Forums Landscape & Garden Design 1 May 21, 2009 9:19 am Ok, need some advice as the title suggests. We've spotted a couple of small runs of couch on the block at the new house. What's the best way to get rid of these. We were planning on using round up but from what I've just read in another thread this isn't the most effective. Or have I misunderstood? Re: Getting rid of couch 5May 21, 2009 9:09 pm sorry Rod but I have never had much luck with roundup or any Glypho product in killing Couch or Kike. Kex, read some of my posts on using roundup and how to boost it's effects. Because (and I have posted many times before in other threads) couch stores so much nutrients within the runner (rhizome) (there's also another name for it too ) the round up is only capable of dehydrating the cells a little way down. Then the stored energy of healthy sections is sparked into action to push through more growth. Pull it out by hand or just keep spraying with Glypho for the next 3 years and you may get there Couch grasses are known to grow as deep as 5m and is one of the worlds most invasive weed problems. It is just one of the reasons I never recommend couches as a turf. and also forms part of what is experienced in the edging thread. Kex, you are in an agricultural area pretty much so go invest in some stuff called "Fusilade". It will be $100 plus but is the only product capable of truly killing that bloody couch! Go to an ag supplier like landmark or mirco bros. It is very toxic so make sure you have mask on, long sleeves, gloves, covered shoes and long pants and spray when it isn't windy This stuff is the opposite to weed and feed type herbicides. It won't affect shrubs but wipes out grasses! Guaranteed Commonly used on golf courses in the rough areas for the control of grasses. Re: Getting rid of couch 6May 21, 2009 9:18 pm Actually Rod I guess it isn't that I disagree with you, but there are better ways Also I wouldn't believe the hype about "older" couch species being more invasive. Sometimes turf suppliers can give inaccurate info in the name of the $. like used car salesman, "Oh no! It would never ever break down on you. This is just like a new car" In other words it's like polishing a poo. Re: Getting rid of couch 7May 22, 2009 1:25 am I suppose it depends on the thickness of the infestation, in the past we have successfully knocked out the odd bit of couch, kikuyu, but it has also been ongoing (used to be part of a large commercial crew years back). It's better to spray as much leaf as possible so best not to do it after mowing or before. With couch having sub surface rhizomes they are a pain to address and they have the ability to sprout from a small segment of vegetative material. Fusilade we also used as a good knockdown for monocots, seemed to work faster. Re: Getting rid of couch 8May 22, 2009 1:34 am amen to that Remember try to spray in the morning with at least a few fine days up your sleeve. Add one or two drops of dishwashing liquid after you have filled the sprayer and a cap of seasol It works much more effectively than using urea That is for your best chance at success. We done our landscaping a year back using Couch, over the recent months I have noticed another type of grass growing with the Couch in a 2x2m radius.
